Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 2 volumes, both bound in very early limp vellum. Covers are wrinkled and faded, but firmly attached. Spines have cracked at the front hinge, so both books have a bit of a forlorn look. You can peek at the sewn cords on the spine of the text blocks themselves to admire the fine craftsmanship. It's possible that the original spines were sliced intentionally by a treasure-hunter looking for manuscript pages used at scrap beneath the vellum of the 16th century bindings. Remains of handwritten titles on the spines. Both volumes well-sewn and text blocks entirely intact. Good quality paper remains flat and free of wrinkling and foxing. Pages are numbered on both sides. Volume 1 is 1008 pages. Volume 2 is 536 pages. Text is in Italian. Plutarch's lives. Each section has a full page title page with elaborate engraved borders and a small portrait of the subject. Some nice large initials in the text. Printed in a clearly legibly italic font. Large printer's device on the title pages, showing a serpent wrapped around a large wooden T, held up by cloud-hands. There is a handwritten line in ancient (but to me, illegible) writing beneath the publication information on each title page. Volumes measure 6.5 x 8.5 inches. Plutarch has been in print for as long as there has been print. It was translated into every European language and formed a foundational historical text for centuries. Prima edizione italiana completa. Ottimo esemplare (alcune carte rifilate rispetto alla legatura, molto lontane dal testo; fisiologiche fiorituree segni tel tempo alla legatura e alle carte, qui molto leggere; restauro marginale alle carte CXXIX e CXXX della prima parte, che non tocca il testo). Prima edizione illustrata delle «Vite parallele» di Plutarco nella sua versione italiana: la prima parte, tradotta dal reatino Battista Alessandro Jaconello, era stata pubblicata all Aquila nel 1482 ed era riapparsa, per lo stesso veneziano Zoppino, nel 1518; del tutto inedita invece la versione della seconda parte ad opera del noto erudito rivano Giulio Cesare Scaligero, che qui firma per l ultima volta un lavoro con il suo nome di battesimo; dopo il 1519 infatti «si stabilì a Venezia: assunse l'incarico di tradurre la seconda parte delle «Vite» di Plutarco che furono stampate nel 1525 presso lo Zoppino. Questa traduzione è l'ultima opera che i documenti registrano sotto il nome di Giulio Bordon: alla fine del '24 questi aveva ormai lasciato l'Italia al seguito del vescovo Della Rovere. Non è possibile precisare se egli lasciasse in tale modo alle proprie spalle anche contrasti col potere politico e religioso tali da poter giustificare l'appellativo di "esule" che gli verrà attribuito da alcuni nel corso del suo periodo francese. A fine copy (some leaf-edges trimmed, far from the text; some foxing and age-wear to the binding and leaves, as is normal, very slight; here marginal restoration to leaves CXXIX and CXXX of the first part, far from the text). First illustrated edition of the Italian translation of Plutarch's «Parallel Lives»: the first part, translated by Battista Alessandro Jaconello, was published in L'Aquila in 1482 and then reprinted by Zoppino in 1518 before it made its way into this edition; the second part was unpublished and appears here for the first time: translated by the well-known scholar Giulio Cesare Scaligero, who signed one of his works with his surname for the last time here. After 1519, «he settled in Venice and took on the task of translating the second part of Plutarch's «Lives», which was printed in 1525 by Zoppino. This translation is the last work recorded under the name Giulio Bordon: by the end of 1524, he had left Italy with Bishop Della Rovere. We cannot know whether he left behind conflicts with political and religious powers that would justify the label of exile that some would cast upon him during his time in France. From then on, [the author] always published his works under his surname Della Scala or under the pseudonym Scaligero» (Giorgio Patrizi, entry «Della Scala» in «Dizionario biografico degli Italiani», volume 37, 1989). In the text, in varying positions within the page, are small woodcut scenes that extend horizontally across both columns of text.
