[++] The entire volume (of 680pp) is offered with the Pockels paper appearing on pp 144-172, 269-305, and 372-394. [++] "The photoelastic effect was analyzed for crystals by Pockels [and first described in the paper offered here], who also discovered the electro-optic effect, i.e., the production of birefringence [formally defined as the double refraction of light in a transparent, molecularly ordered material] of light on the application of an electric field. . This is a quadratic effect which produces a birefringence proportional to the square of the voltage.--Wikipedia [++] The Pockels paper is not alone in this volume! Several other interesting contributions are made by: Heinrich Hertz, "Ueber die Fortleitung electrischer Wellen durch Drähte", pp. 395-407. AND Elster and Geitel, "Ueber die Electricitätserregung beim Contact verdünnter Gase mit galvanisch glühende Drähten", pp. 315-329. Perhaps of equal significance to the Pockels is Hallwachs, W. "Ueber den Zusammenhang des Elektricitätsverlustes durch beleuchtigung mit der Lichtsabsorption" which is the second paper he contributed on the photoelectric effect (first seen in 1888 as "Über den Einfluss des Lichtes auf electrostatisch geladene Körper" by Wilhelm Hallwachs" in Annalen der Physik und Chemie, 1888; pp. 666-674 [also offered by me on this site]. "Hallwachs was an assistant of Heinrich Hertz, in 1886, before the photoelectric effect was discovered. Hallwachs and Hertz, in 1887, carried on the investigations of electromagnetic waves. In 1888 Hallwachs formulated the hypothesis that a conductive plate on which to focus ultraviolet light carries a positive charge because the electrons are gouged out. This happened with more intensity in selenium. The phenomenon was seen in the same year by A. Righi. The phenomenon was called 'Hallwachs-Effekt', now called the photoelectric effect. The investigation of the photoelectric effect laid the foundation for the development of the photoelectric cell, photo electricity and Albert Einstein's quantum light hypothesis." [++] There are many other papers of interest in this volume.
