Procedencia: H.P. Kraus Referencias: European Americana 535/13; Stitwell 488; NLM/Durling 2812; Waller 7548; Wellcome 5141 First edition of Nicolaus Pol's famous tract of syphilis and its cure by means of lignum vitae or guaiacum, published three years after the death of its author. 'Written by Dr. Pol in 1517, this is the earliest work known to us treating of cure of the "Morbus gallicus", or syphilis, by guaiacum wood imported from the West Indies. The guaiacum wood was the first introduced into Europe by the Spaniards in 1508. Administered in cases of syphilis, the decoction of the wood was reckoned a certain specific, Nicolaus Pol writes that some three thousand persons in Spain have already been restored to health by it'. (Maggs Bros) 'The text contains detailed instructions for the treatment of the disease, relating to diet, avoidance of cold, etc., together with the making of the decoction from the guaiac wood. The patient should abstain completely from sexual intercourse and seek instead simple pleasures, avoiding wrath, wood, or melancholy. He should have his family near his and musicians to soothe him, and should not take an excess of wine. The tract is addressed to Matthew Lang, Chancellor to Emperor Maximilian, Lang sent a medical commission to Spain and Portugal to study the guaiac cure and from circumstantial evidence it is concluded that this was in 1516/1517 and the Pol was a member of the commission. His tract is dated December 1517 and a ms. in the Army Medical Library, Cleveland, throws considerable light on the origins of Pol's work. The scribe was one Ippolito of Montreale, a medical student at Perugia living with his teacher Giovanni Lorenzo, and making copies for his own use of various mss.
