In 1930 the authors set out to create a record flight around the globe, an objective they achieved in eight days, compared to the 21 days the giant German airship Graf Zeppelin had taken for a similar feat a little earlier. They believed, however, the future for international air travel lay with the aeroplane, not the airship, and it was this they set out to prove in Post's Lockheed Vega, single engine monoplane. Their planning, preparation, back up and equipment was limited, but skill and determination prevailed. First published in 1931 their book, recording the flight in their own words, was long out of print before republished in this Orion edition. 224 pages, including 14 unpaginated pages of facsimile reproduction of the flight log kept by Gatty. 14 b/w photos, map. Card covers VG with slightly curled corners, creased top corner at back with tiny adhesion damage on crease top edge, minor edgewear top front. Red marker pan stripe top left page edges adjacent spine. Small stain title page, text block otherwise excellent.
