Quand il se donne le rôle de Stéphen et donne à Rothko celui de Bloom, d'après Ulysse de Joyce, quand il oppose le juif et le celte, le penchant de Motherwell pour le romanesque est évident. Il était, je pense, philosémite et essayait de faire jouer à Rothko un rôle de l'Ancien Testament que Rothko lui-même n'aurait jamais approuvé. En réalité, Rothko ne ponctuait jamais chacune de ces phrases du vieux «oy» yiddish et n'avait rien du n rabbin. Ceux qui persistait en à le voir ainsi n'étaient généralement pas juifs.
