Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This is the Temple Edition of William Shakespeare's play, "The Comedy of Errors". The book was edited, with a Preface, Glossary and Notes by Israel Gollancz, and published by J. M. Dent in London . This is the 7th Temple Edition, issued in August 1902. It is the shortest of Shakespeare's plays;…according to "The Oxford Companion to English Literature", |> This is one of the earliest and crudest of his plays, and, in the main, is an adaptation of the 'Menaechmi' of Plautus.<| Nonetheless it is a rather madcap comedy of mistaken identities, and despite the overhanging threat of execution that hangs over one of the characters, playgoers found themselves chuckling at the staged absurdities. Audiences still find the story a comic farce, well worth the watching. It's a lovely, petite book, measuring approximately 4" x 5 3/8", bound in dark burgundy cloth with top edge gilt. The front cover has Shakespeare's family heraldic crest stamped in blind; the spine has the title in gilt. The fore- and bottom text-block edges are rough trimmed. Inside, the end-papers, front and back, have Shakespeare's heraldic crest printed in black and yellow. The half-title announces the series ("The Temple Shakespeare"). The frontispiece is a gravure reproduction in miniature of an old etching of the Grammar School at Stratford Upon Avon. This frontispiece is accompanied by a guard tissue, which has printed on it an elegy for the great Bard by Ben Johnson ("And though thou hadst small Latin and less Greek …"). The decorated title page, which is rubricated (printed in red and black), features a central vignette of two smiling head, pointing each to the other. On the verso of the title page is Samuel Coleridge's appreciative assessment of Shakespeare's wit, which starts : "The myriad-minded man, our, and all men's, Shakspeare, has in this piece presented us with a legitimate farce in exactest consonance with the philosophical principles and character of farce as distinguished from comedy and from entertainments …". The rest of the book is lightly rubricated throughout with the act and scene numbers rendered in red. The book is bound with a silk place-marker. SERIES : Temple Shakespeare TITLE : Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors AUTHOR : William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) EDITOR, PREFACE, GLOSSARY, NOTES : Israel Gollancz (1864 - 1930) TEXTUAL QUOTES : Ben Johnson & Samuel Coleridge IMPRINT : J. M. Dent PLACE : London (Aldine House W.C.) DATE : August 1902 PRINTER : Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. EDITION : Reprint, 7th Temple Edition (So stated - one may presume these to be printings) STATUS : This edition OP DETAILS : Petite semi-flexible hardcover; has decorated end-papers, sepia gravure frontispiece with printed tissue guard; decorated title page, rubricated, as are the act and scene designations through the text; has a Preface, a Glossary, and Notes. [xii] + [147] pages; 4" x 5 1/4"; dark burgundy (or maroon) cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and heraldic emblem blind-stamped on front cover. Top edge gilt, fore-and bottom edges rough-trimmed. Bound with silk place-marker. CONDITION — VERY GOOD — This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Gilt lettering on spine is bright; top edge gilt is slightly rubbed but basically fairly bright; the cover has some transparent water staining (of no great effect); else the cover has strong color and only softly bumped corner tips. BINDING -- The leaves have been separated, sometimes with a bit of less care; the whole is pretty solid with no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR -- There are a few small 'tea' stains , and some of the leaves are toned; frontispiece and guard tissue are toned - else clean and presentable with no marking, no writing and no signatures.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This is the Temple Edition of William Shakespeares comedy, "The Merry Wives of Windsor". The book was edited, with a Preface, Glossary and Notes by Israel Gollancz, and published by J. M. Dent in London . This is the 8th Temple Edition, issued in November 1902. Herein one finds the comic, romant…ic imbroglios of the irrepressible Sir John Falstaff as he withstands the merry but well-deserved indignities contrived by Mistress Page and Mistress Ford. This play, with its attending sub-plots, provided genial whoops of laughter for theatre-goers in Shakespeare's day. It's a lovely, petite book, measuring approximately 4" x 5 3/8", bound in maroon cloth with top edge gilt. This frontispiece is accompanied by a guard tissue, which has printed on it an elegy for the great Bard by Ben Johnson. The decorated title page, which is rubricated (printed in red and black), features a central vignette of of Falstaff and the Mistresses Ford and Page. On the verso of the title page is am appreciative assessment of Shakespeare's wit, "The Common Gallant" by John Dennis. Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First ed. with some unopened pages. Although this volume is in excellent condition it is merely "acceptable" because there is only one map in back pocket; the pref. by Marechal Foch is in French, but there is a translation in the appendix. 385 p., clean and unmarked anywhere on strong paper only mild…ly age-toned--no foxing; TEG; tissue guard on frontis. photo-portrait of Viscount French is creased but not torn; holograph of signature, on assumes, beneath frontis. portrait; binding tight; crimson boards with still bright gilt lettering have light bumping at corners and slight rubbing at some edges. Fascinating primary source.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. In Hebrew. 104 pages. 205 x 125 cm. Top left corner of title page has a very small rubber stamp impression in Hebrew of the former owner, Professor Michael (Milton) Arfa, (1920 New York City - 2003 New York City) the distinguished Rabbi, author and professor of He…brew literature and philosophy. Dr. Arfa taught generations of students at Yeshiva University, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute, Hunter College, HUC-JIR and NYU. As chairman of the Israel Matz Foundation, Dr. Arfa devoted himself to aiding indigent Hebrew writers, and published scholarly works of Hebrew literature and philosophy. He was a gifted teacher, humanitarian, scholar, lover of Zion and above all a modest and quiet doer of good deeds. Reuven Ben-Yosef was an Israeli poet, born Robert Eliot Reiss, the son of Joseph and Cecilia Reiss, in New York City on May 31, 1937. His childhood was spent in Manhattan, where he attended P.S. 187. He studied at The High School of Music & Art, Westwood High School in New Jersey, Oberlin College in Ohio, became a professional jazz musician, served in the U.S. Army in Heilbronn, Germany, and during 1957 - 1959 published poetry in American literary magazines and The New York Times. Before immigrating to Israel he published his first book of poetry, The Endless Seed, after which he only published in Hebrew. During the Yom Kippur War he was with the first military units to launch the counter-offensive in the southern sector of the Golan Heights and was on front-line duty for 145 days. In the summer of 1976 he moved to Jerusalem. He supported his family by translating and teaching creative writing to high-school students. When the Lebanon War broke out in 1982, he was again called to duty and sent to the front for 41 days. In 1996 he started a small publishing house called Sifre Bitzaron. He died of lung cancer on March 9, 2001, leaving a brother, sister, wife, three children and seven grandchildren. He wrote 19 books of Hebrew poetry, two novels, two books of essays, and a writer's diary. After his death, his wife published a book, In Memory of Reuven Ben-Yosef, which included articles by his colleagues (2002). In 2015 Syracuse University Press published Letters to America: Selected Poems of Reuven Ben-Yosef, edited and translated by Michael Weingrad. Awards: The Jewish Book Council of America (awarded twice: 1969, 1975; Moznaim Prize (1978); N.Y.U. Neuman Prize (1979); Peter Shiprert Prize (1982); Bar-Ilan University Prize (1986); Keren Hayasod Prize (1990); Prime Minister Levi Eshcol Prize (1996-1997).
