Black and yellow cloth; vibrant gilt stamped lettering to spine. Toning to text block edges; deckle fore-edge. Author's near full page ten-line ink inscription on half-title page: "For Maryon Allen . . . Hope Ridings Miller August 15, 1969 Washington, D.C." Toning to pages 76-77 from laid-in newspaper clippings. Laid-in between pages 72-73 is publisher-supplied b/w publicity photo print of Hope Ridings Miller with President Lyndon B. Johnson and entourage along with two single-side stapled sheets from Holt, Rinehart promoting the book. Top fore-edge corners of pages 5-10 creased from fold-downs with ink underlining and margin marks - no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal and leaves otherwise appear to be clean. Binding is firm. Book was acquired directly from the estate of Maryon Pittman Allen (1925-2018) who, at the time of the inscription, was the wife of United States Senator from Alabama James Browning Allen (1912-1978) who was in office from January 3, 1969 to June 1, 1978. James Allen passed away from a heart attack and was succeeded by Maryon Allen who was appointed by Alabama Governor George Wallace thereupon holding the office from June 8, 1978 to November 7, 1978 but thereafter losing a special election. After leaving the Senate Maryon Allen worked at The Washington Post as a columnist, the same institution which had employed author Hope Ridings Miller as society editor from 1938 to 1944. Blue cloth with gilt stamping to spine and front board. Some soiling and foxing to text block edges and endpapers; a few scattered spots of light soiling to interior leaves. Binding is firm. Three-line ink inscription "Helen Potasnic | Parsons School of Design | Section 1." at top of front free endpaper; Helen Potasnic was the maiden name of Meridian, Mississippi artist Helen P. Shapiro (1914-2006). Shapiro's only formal art training was her one year enrollment at Parsons as her educational plans were cut short by the passing of her father in 1948. Shapiro was primarily a watercolor painter from the 1940s through the 1960s thereafter focusing on mixed media and fabric collages into the 1990s. Her work remains collected and sought after today. Book has a direct provenance to the artist as it was acquired from the Meridian estate of Helen Shapiro's son David Shapiro.

Raleigh, North Carolina bookseller ticket (The State Book Shop) affixed at bottom right of front pastedown. Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) served as Secretary of the Navy from 1913-1921 under President Woodrow Wilson as well as being US Ambassador to Mexico from 1933 to 1941 under Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Daniels followed YEARS OF PEACE with a second volume titled THE WILSON ERA; YEARS OF WAR AND AFTER, 1917-1923 (UNC Press, 1946). Also affixed to the front pastedown is the personal signed bookplate of USDA research agronomist and Mississippi State University Distinguished Professor Edgar E. Hartwig (1913-1996), a.k.a. "Mr. Soybean," who specialized in developing insect and disease resistant soybean varieties. An estimated ninety percent of soybean varieties grown in the southeastern United States originated from Hartwig's research. A very good copy with Daniel's two-line signed inscription on the front free endpaper: "Sincerely yours | Josephus Daniels.".

Stranahan (February 27, 1861 - July 6, 1928). Born Osewego County, New York. He was a member of the New York Senate 1896-1902. In March 1902, he was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as Collector of Port of New York. In 1907 he had to resign his seat and resign the collectorship due to ill health. Stranahan died in Winwick, Huntingdonshire, England. His wife Elsie predeceased him in 1922. Afterward he lived in Winwick with his daughter Louise, the wife of Major Henry Torrens. Subsequently the collection of poetry books were passed down via various members of the Torrens family.
