Maurits, (1567- 1625), prins van Oranje en graaf van Nassau was stadhouder en legeraanvoerder van de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Tot hij in 1618 de titel prins van Oranje erfde van zijn halfbroer Filips Willem, werd hij Maurits van Nassau genoemd. Maurits bracht zijn jeugd deels door op slot Dillenburg waar zijn oom Jan van Nassau hem opvoedde. Zijn vader Willem van Oranje kon dat niet op zich nemen omdat hij destijds in de Nederlanden was om de Opstand tegen Spanje te leiden. Na opleidingen in Heidelberg en Leiden werd Maurits op zijn achttiende verjaardag stadhouder van Holland en Zeeland. Hij bracht twee jaar door in het Staatse leger voordat hij het opperbevel kreeg. Maurits werd in 1590 stadhouder over de provincies Gelderland, Overijssel en Utrecht. Als kapitein-generaal voerde hij het leger aan tegen Spanje. Gedurende de Tien Jaren van 1588 tot 1598 behaalde hij onder het politieke leiderschap van de landsadvocaat Johan van Oldenbarnevelt vele overwinningen. Het was een keerpunt in de oorlog en de Spanjaarden werden uit het noorden en oosten van de Republiek verdreven. Op militair gebied was dit succes mede te danken aan de hervormingen die Maurits samen met de Friese stadhouder Willem Lodewijk in het leger doorvoerde. De goede samenwerking met Van Oldenbarnevelt kreeg een deuk toen Maurits tijdens een expeditie op een Spaans leger stuitte: de Slag bij Nieuwpoort. Tijdens het Twaalfjarig Bestand brak in de Republiek een religieus conflict uit. Maurits koos de kant van de orthodoxe calvinisten (Gomaristen), waarmee hij recht tegenover Van Oldenbarnevelt kwam te staan, met uiteindelijk de onthoofding van de landsadvocaat tot gevolg.
