Five raised bands, title in gilt over red and green morocco labels affixed to spine. Gilt embellishments to compartments on spine. Solid text blocks, small chips to corners, faint creasing along hinges. Light foxing along endpapers, occasional spotting throughout text. Overall, a bright, near fine example. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper of both volumes. (Gaskell 4a) (Gaskell 5a). In addition to Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, John Baskerville is celebrated for his clear printings of Virgil (1757), Joseph Addison works (1761), The Bible (1763), and Vergil in English (1766). Black leather with beautiful, perhaps original binding. Gold patterned border on the boards and large floral motif decoration in the centers. Raised cords, with gold decorations in all 6 panels of the spine. Marbled endpapers. Foreedges gilt. Book measures 6" x 9". Text is in a single column, without the decorative border (other editions of the Baskerville BOCP have double columns of text and/or a border around the text). Unpaginated. Price of the book printed at the bottom of the title page is "seven shillings and Six Pence, unbound" but the Seven Shillings part is a separate small piece of paper that is pasted over whatever original price was printed on the title page. 2 names signed on the first blank page. The first is "Frances Norris" and it is dated 22nd Sept 1760. The other inscription is "Given to Lorisa Fredgold by Mrs Norris in June 1820" [the name is hard to read & might be something else please ask for photos.] Very good condition. A beautiful copy in every regard.
