This book addresses crime and the treatment of criminals, examining the adverse effects of a retributive justice system that prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation. The author argues that society's reliance on harsh punishments, capital punishment, torture, and inhumane prison conditions has only served to perpetuate violence and fails to address the root causes of crime. Instead, the author advocates for a more compassionate approach, one that focuses on understanding the reasons behind criminal behavior and implementing programs that promote rehabilitation and social reintegration. This book is an essential read for anyone concerned about the state of the criminal justice system and the devastating consequences of a culture of punishment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Pamphlet. Condizione: Very good. First Edition. Staple-bound pamphlet. 9"x5 3/4". 8 pp. No wraps as issued. Small chip to upper right corner of first page. Light toning to edges and margins. 1" closed tear at bottom of crease. This is a report read at a New York State conference on penal reform in 1902. It was prepared and presented by committe chariman and progressive reformer Eugene Ambrose Philbin, cowritten by 8 other noted activist leaders, including Josephine Shaw Lowell and William Church Osborn. The report admonishes the presence of politics and profiteering in the administration of prisons and charitable organizations, the first seeds of corruption that have now blossomed into America's billion dollar prison industrial complex. The pamphlet reads today as an early warning and somewhat naive call to action, concluding with the hope that if earnest workers were to make a "black-list, which would contain the names of all politicians who sought to use the alms of the poor for their person profit, it would take but a short while to be assured of freedom from such interference." Alas, Mr. Philbin, there was not enough paper in the world.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book details an investigation into Ontario's prison and reformatory systems. Composed of first-hand accounts and reports from visits to various institutions, this work synthesizes the state of these systems in the late 19th century, particularly in regards to the classification and treatment of prisoners. The author also discusses the causes of crime in the province and proposes a series of reforms to improve the system. These reforms include the professionalization of the prison system via standardized training and promotion protocols for its staff, the expansion of the existing system of industrial schools for juvenile offenders, and a switch to the indeterminate sentencing model for adult offenders. This book provides an insightful look into the penal and reformatory systems of Ontario in the late 19th century and offers invaluable insights into the challenges and complexities of these systems, many of which remain relevant to this day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
