Orson wrote and lectured on phrenology, preservation of health, popular education and social reform from 1834 to 1887.

One passage reads "Women love to look up to their 'lord and master', but not to be looked up to". Tight binding. Burgundy coloured embossed coverboards. Decorative endpapers.… Frontis illustration with tissue-guard is a portrait of the author. Plain brown wrapper on coverboards may be original to the book. The wrapper is split down the front spine fold. Richly illustrated with engravings; 100 illustrations in total. One illustration (Bacchus on pg. 206) was neatly cut out from book by a previous owner, but is laid inside the book. Edge of text block is marbled. On the title page there is a stamp advertising the services of Prof. F. L. Cavanagh, who provided phrenological examinations. No publisher or location of publisher is indicated. Size: Sm 4to (9" to 11"). 1052 pp.
