Lettres ornées, culs-de-lampe gravées sur bois ; marque au titre gravée sur bois avec la devise de l'imprimeur-libraire : Cor rectum inquirit scientiam.« On lit après le titre une épitre dédicatoire adressée à Jean Sarrazin, alors prieur de St-Vaast d'Arras et depuis archevêque de Cambrai » (Duthilloeul).Jean Bogard (Joannes Bogardus) imprima et publia dès 1556 (1562?) dans sa ville natale Louvain puis partagea ses activités entre cette ville et Douai où il installa une librairie et un atelier de typographie et, peut-être, de reliure. A partir de 1594 son fils Joannes le jeune, établi à Douai, se substitua à son père dans les relations commerciales que Bogardus entretenait avec l?officine plantinienne. Jean Bogart publia à Louvain puis Douai soixante-dix ouvrages au moins en latin, français, néerlandais, anglais, notamment des relations d?actualités, et des réfutations de la religion réformée. Il meurt à Louvain en 1616, léguant l'atelier à son fils Jean II Bogard.La reliure est datée de la fin du XVIe siècle, ornée d'une rare et jolie plaque figurant Samson terrassant le lion. Cette plaque, imprimée en noir, porte en pied cette légende : De dome dente ex. La reliure est datée 1591 et les initiales IBG frappées sur le premier plat sont certainement celles du premier propriétaire du volume.
