Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. Publication: Hassocks, Sussex, St Dominic's Press, 1933 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 36. Condition Report: Fine. Bespoke full black leather binding remains remarkably taut and square, with the boards and spine exhibiting virtually no signs of shelf-wear, rubbing, or hand…ling. The silver gilt tooling (featuring the distinctive St Dominic's Press monogram and cross alongside a crisp border rule) is exceptionally bright, retaining a sharp, clean contrast against the dark leather. Internally, the hinges are perfectly sound, and the decorative endpapers remain vibrant, completely unmarked, and secure. The text block is impressively clean; the pages present a crisp, bright appearance devoid of foxing, spotting, or handling marks, save for the faintest age-related toning expected of quality paper from this era. Overall, a beautifully preserved and highly attractive copy. Catalogue Note: First Edition, limited to a print run of 500 copies. The volume is formally recognized under the bibliography reference Taylor & Sewell A227, placing it securely within the esteemed output of the St Dominic's Press during its vibrant operation in Ditchling. The book has been finely custom-bound by Philip Brook of Surrey in full black leather. The upper board is elegantly stamped in silver with the publisher's insignia, which is tastefully mirrored in blind on the lower board. This bespoke enhancement showcases an exceptional level of craftsmanship that brilliantly complements the artisanal spirit of the text itself. Due to the inherently small limitation and the high-quality binding elevating this specific iteration, the book is remarkably scarce on the open market. It stands as a prime collectible for enthusiasts of the Arts and Crafts movement and dedicated collectors of English private press histories. A fascinating and exceptionally scarce instructional treatise by Dunstan Pruden, a prominent silversmith and key member of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic. Featuring an illuminating introduction by the celebrated wood-engraver Philip Hagreen, this beautifully crafted volume offers invaluable insights into the traditional techniques, hand-tooling, and philosophies of small-workshop silversmithing—all firmly rooted in the Arts and Crafts tradition. It remains a remarkable artefact from one of the most important English private presses of the twentieth century, presenting a perfect acquisition for both practitioners of the craft and collectors of fine printing. Uncredited (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Revised variant edition, duodecimo size, 116 pp. Mimes, the author states, are similar to early liturgical plays and this work includes mimes titled, "The Stations of the Cross", "The Rosary", "St. George and the Turkish Knight", 'Harlequinade" and "Sir Galahad"; illustrated with drawings of mas…ks designed and made by Dunstan Pruden. The Saint Dominic's Press, founded by Harry (Hilary) Douglas Clarke Pepler, flourished at Ditchling, Sussex, from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable", with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand, believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine, handmade to machine-made paper, and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." Pepler met Edward Johnston and Eric Gill while living in Hammersmith; Pepler and his family would eventually move to Ditchling to join Gill, who was one of the most important artists to provide illustrations for the St. Dominic's Press. Other artists who provided illustrations included David Jones, Desmond Chute, Philip Hagreen, and Mary Dudley Short, among others. ___DESCRIPTION: Printed tan paper wrappers with yapped edges, black lettering and a small illustration on the front wrap and title page; duodecimo size (7 1/2" x 5"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-110 [111] [1, colophon]. . ___CONDITION: Near fine, the wraps clean, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and entirely free of prior owner markings; dustiness to the yapped edges, a lightly stamped price ("Price 75¢") at the bottom margin of the front wrap, small creases on front cover and slight foxing to endpapers. ___CITATIONS: Taylor and Sewell, no. A218; note that the quotes and much of the introductory information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
