Thin Covered Boards. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. New Edition. - 166 mm. Red cloth thin covered boards, gilt titling spine and front. Maps, diagrams, plans. Pp. viii, 4, 337, [2]. Cover is well worn with a few minor creases and moderate darkening (patchy grubbiness). Gilt titling is mostly faded on front (the word PARIS is still… quite bright). Gilt titling on spine appears much brighter, being only partially faded. Hinges cracked front and rear, book is slowly disintegrating with rear fly leaf completely detached (though still present). Nearby leaves are only partially attached, though all are present. Some gatefold maps have minor chips and tears. Darkened FEP and half title page has the word/name "Bliss" written in pencil and underlined. Most of the book is holding together well with only twenty or so leaves leaves becoming loose at front and rear. Pages 58-66 have many pencil markings (ticks and crosses). A few other sparse instances of pencil markings, mostly faint underlining and some brief hand written words on the back of maps. A lovely old volume with oodles of character. Overall fair condition.
The Cornhill Magazine No. 33 (New Series) No. 471 March 1899
The Cornhill Magazine (1860-1975) was a monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal named after the street address of the founding publisher Smith, Elder & Co. at 65 Cornhill in London. In the 1860s, under editor William Makepeace Thackeray, the paper saw a large circulation, peaking at around 110,000. Due to emerging competitors, circulation fell to 20,000 by 1870. The following year, Leslie Stephen took over as editor. When Stephen left in 1882, circulation had further fallen to 12,000. The Cornhill was purchased by John Murray in 1912, and continued to publish issues until 1975.
