Reliure plein veau bleu marine tranches dorées Bon état . Le livre d heures apparaît à la fin du XIIIe siècle en Europe occidentale. Ce nouveau format de livre de prières dérive du psautier en usage chez les religieux et, dans une moindre mesure, chez les laïcs, dont il simplifie le contenu pour le rendre accessible à une pratique régulière. Après les années 1400, il occupe une place croissante dans la piété quotidienne, telle qu elle se développe à la fin du Moyen Âge : de plus en plus centrée sur l individu, celle-ci s exerce dans un cadre privé, plus intime, et favorise la lecture silencieuse, la prière et la méditation sur les textes et les images. Les offices du livre d heures sont faits pour être lus tout au long de la journée, au rythme des huit heures en usage dans les monastères et qui rythment le quotidien des moines. Cette temporalité vécue fait cohabiter le temps perçu dont le jour est de longueur variable, avec le découpage régulier des heures canoniales mesurées selon des intervalles fixes. L iconographie mariale participe aussi à susciter un sentiment d identification, de réactualisation de l histoire sainte à travers la prière et la liturgie, et s intègre à une religiosité d ordre affective et personnelle qui devient la norme à la fin du Moyen Âge. Les médiations sur les images superposent au présent de la lectrice le passé biblique et les actions qui s y sont déroulées : le temps liturgique se caractérise en effet par sa qualité de répétition et de réactualisation permanente par l entremise d actes rituels, de paroles ou de prières. Dans le livre d heures, l office de la Vierge constitue le corps principal de l ouvrage et est destiné à scander les heures de la journée par des lectures, des prières et la contemplation des images qui les accompagnent. Celles-ci structurent des temporalités à plusieurs échelles, puisque chaque heure s ouvre avec une image, qui elle-même correspond à une fête mariale de l année liturgique chrétienne. Ainsi, l Annonciation ouvre l heure des Matines à la première heure du jour, peu après minuit, puis la Visitation à l heure des Laudes au lever du soleil, la Nativité à Prime, l Annonce aux Bergers à Tierce. L Adoration des Mages ouvre Sexte, et None est dédiée à la Présentation au Temple. La Fuite en Égypte qui a traditionnellement lieu au crépuscule accompagne les Vêpres et enfin le Couronnement de la Vierge, plus rarement l Assomption, clôt les heures de la Vierge avec les Complies.
