First issued in Belfast in 1897 at the author's expense, it later drew cult admirers, inc…luding members of the Inklings, who read it aloud for amusement. This Nonesuch Press edition of 1926 is limited to 1,250 numbered copies and was the first fine-press reissue of the book. It includes three woodcut engravings by W. M. R. Quick. Irene Iddesleigh, A Novel by Mrs. Amanda McKittrick Ros. Published by The Nonesuch Press, London, 1926. Limited to 1250 copies of which this is number 39. First edition thus. The original issue was in Belfast in 1897. Includes 3 woodcut engravings by W.M.R. Quick, including frontispiece. A good to very good hardback, bound with tan leather spine and corners with printed patterned paper over boards. Gilt title to head of spine. Leather has some scuffing, bumping and wear and is chipped to head and tail of spine. With green floral endpapers, with a stain to the first free endpaper. Text is clean and bright throughout some offsetting to front and rear, and with toned edges to the rough cut pages. vii + 151pp. Dimensions: 160mm high x 136mm wide x 15mm deep. Weight approximately 272g. W.M.R. Quick (illustratore).

Engle was a barrister and noted collector of books, his library containing obscure and sought after works. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. Bound in the publisher's original paper vellum, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very good, with a little discolouration to boards and spine, and the odd mark. Boards have sprung slightly. Dust wrapper is very smart, with light edge wear and a few minor chips to the extremities. A little sunning to the spine of the wrap, wth a few spots to the front label. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, wth just the odd mark to page extremities. Some pages remain unopened. Very Good Indeed. W. M. R. Quick (illustratore). book.
