Unmittelbar an die Brandwand der Nebengebäude schließt Am Sandwerder 5 das Haus Guthmann an, heute Sitz des Literarischen Colloquium Berlin. (1) Das Grundstück war seit den 1870er Jahren Treffpunkt der Seglergruppe "Lustige Sieben". (2) 1883 wurde es von Robert Guthmann erworben. Der Bauherr und Baumeister gehörte zu den führenden Unternehmern der Berliner Bauindustrie, hatte die Portlandzementfabrik Rüdersdorf gegründet und war Eigentümer der Berliner Kalksandsteinwerke Robert Guthmann in Niederlehme. 1884-85 führte seine Firma den Bau seiner Villa aus - vermutlich nach einem Entwurf des Architekturbüros Kayser & von Grozsheim. 1898 wurde die Villa an der Südseite links durch einen Anbau mit Innenhof sowie Gartenhalle und Pavillon erheblich erweitert. Der Entwurf stammte wiederum von Kayser & von Grozsheim, was dem einheitlichen Erscheinungsbild des Baukörpers zugute kam. (3) Auch das Wirtschaftsgebäude an der linken Grundstücksgrenze wurde stilistisch dem Hauptgebäude angepasst. Die Villa Guthmann gehört zu den wenigen erhaltenen Villen der renommierten, überregional tätigen Architektengemeinschaft. Sie bildet ein hervorragendes Beispiel für den ab 1880 in Mode gekommenen flämisch-niederländisch beeinflussten Renaissancestil, den Hans Grisebach in Berlin eingeführt und den das Büro Kayser & von Grozsheim gewissermaßen zu einem Markenzeichen erhoben hatte.
