The first issue is dated 1 June 1945, the rest undated but July - November with the latter anticipating a Special Xmas issue. Each is in its original b/w print…ed slightly glossy wraps with masthead incorporating the Palestine Police emblem. All printed at Warhaftig's Press. 24, 28, 40, 40, 24, 28pp with b/w photos and several local adverts. Generally very good, foxed in places with some staining. Extremely rare, unrecorded on Worldcat and Library Hub, with very few other references found. A later issue (Vol 3 no 2, Aug 1946) is in the Desmond Morton Collection at St Antony's College Oxford. The Palestine Police Mobile Force (PMF) was formed under the Palestine Police (PP) in 1944 as a fully militarised strike force. It was a "desperate" measure to deal with escalating violence in the final years of the British Mandate. It was initiated and planned by PP Inspector General John Rymer-Jones and Senior Staff Officer Michael Joseph McConnell. With no funding from local government, Rymer-Jones visited the War Office in London, which in spite of pressing needs in France, gave £2M to form the force. It included 800 personnel drawn from those who had seen active military service in Italy, North Africa and Britain. Organised in four companies, it was headquartered at Jenin with an administrative unit at Ramallah. Their battle dress distinguished them from the rest of the PP, with whom they had an uneasy relationship. They were trained at a special facility at Jenin in paramilitary tactics, spotting drug smugglers, the law, and Arabic. Known as "Rymer's Babes", new PP recruits were required to train and serve in a PMF unit first. It was disbanded in 1947. The magazine was written, edited and produced by PMF Constables. The editors are named as LH Lovett and RAJ Trew of the Welfare Office in Jenin. Its title is not explained, but "Shu" may be a transliteration of the Levantine Arabic word for "What". Issue 1 opens with a welcome by Lt-Col LL Brighton (PP Superintendent and PMF Second in Command) stating "During the past year we, in Jenin, have watched (and nursed) the PMF through many 'teething troubles' --- Now we have a pretty strong 'bite'". In each issue Trew interviews a "PMF Personality", who shares information on his origins, education, military service, family situation, hobbies etc. These include Brighton, Lt-Col Robin Stable (PMF Commanding Officer and PP Assistant Inspector General), JAS Adolph (PP Deputy Superintendent and PMF Adjutant), Rymer-Jones, WT Southgate (PMF Officer Commanding and Training Company), and J Horlock (British Constable, PMF HQ "Q" Branch). Southgate's is relatively brief, stating "The Official Secrets Act prevented Mr Southgate going more fully into details concerning his actual duties" prior to the PP, but a hint is dropped that he wears the pale blue wings of a parachutist. And Pickett refused to confide his experiences as a POW in Tobruk. There is news from different parts of the PMF (Tel Aviv, Ramallah, 1, 2 and 3 Companies, Jenin Camp). And on PMF recreational activities including sports (hockey, cricket, boxing, swimming, badminton, athletics meetings, tennis, shooting, indoor pursuits), its Camera Club and Dance Band. Other content is generally informative or entertainment related. Wartime experiences are shared from the French Resistance and in South Africa. Photography in Palestine is discussed as a hobby. "E.H." writes on local history (Megiddo, Mount Tabor, Nazareth, Cana of Galilee). There are regular features on forthcoming films invariably with photos of leading ladies, pieces on swing jazz, social and personal news, stories and poetry, and a monthly pin up.
