The notes in this book are about the Small Wars in tropical Africa for which the following medals with clasps were given: Ashantee Medal, Central Africa Medal, East & West Africa Medal, East and Central Africa Medal, Ashanti Star, Ashanti Medal, and the African General Service Medal. The book is divided into two sections, dealing firstly with events in West Africa, and then in East and Central Africa. Each part gives: 1. A brief historical background to show how the British came to be there. 2. A note on the local colonial forces raised in each territory and the H.M. ships involved. 3. Except in the case of the Ashanti Wars, the following resume: (a) Extracts from the Army Order or Admiralty Instruction authorising the medal or clasp. (b) A short narrative of where the action occurred, who was involved, what happened and the casualties incurred. (c) Extracts from the Medal Rolls to show approximately the numbers entitled to the clasp. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with no titling. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The front and rear fixed endpapers show wrinkling and bubbling and there are tape stains on the corners of the free endpapers (probably where a protective cover for the wrapper had been attached). The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and wrinkling. The spine ends are bumped with nicks and chipping at the top of the spine. …
