Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. First Edition. 1954 FIRST USA Edition. Original red cloth with gilt ice-axe decoration front, gilt lettering spine. The book is EX-LIBRARY (US ARMY) with library stamp on FFEP, title page and top edge of text block, and library number painted on spine. Card pocket has been roughly removed from rear pastedown. The blurb from the front flap of the lacking dust jacket has been pasted to the front pastedown. The book covers have splash mark to front cover, faded spine, open split along 3/4 of the outside front spine crease (but binding is quite solid). LACKING the dust jacket. Pages are clean without marks or writing, no foxing, and the binding is quite solid. Complete with all pages and photos. A good copy for reading. From the collection of Lute Jerstad with his name stamped on the FFEP and on the bottom of the text block. By the age of 26 Jerstad had guided over 40 climbs up Mt Rainier and climbed Mt McKinley (Denali), establishing a climbing resume that landed him a spot on the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition. Jerstad was the 12th or 13th person (roped with Barry Bishop) to climb to the summit of Mt Everest (assuming that neither Mallory or Irvine reached the top), being a summiting member of the 1963 American Everest Expedition, and the first to film on the top of Everest. He was also a university professor of Asian drama with specialization on the mountain cultures of Nepal, Tibet, India and Pakistan. He authored the book, Mani Rimdu, a treatise on the Sherpa dance drama celebrated annually in the Khumbu region near Mount Everest. He later created a trekking and outdoor adventure service, Lute Jerstad Adventure, offering guided trips in N America, the Himalaya, India and surrounding countries. The book measures 218mm tall x 141mm, and has 334 pages, 27 b/w & 9 colour photos, 7 appendixes, drawings, index. PHOTOS ARE OF ACTUAL ITEM BEING OFFERED. Clarence Doore (illustratore).

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Jacket Issued. Reprint. 1979 FIRST PAPERBACK printing with transcripts from taped discussion of trip from on the mountain in 1953 (not in 1st edition) & additional material by members based on 25th reunion of team. SIGNED by Charles Houston, Robert Bates, George Bell, Tony Streather, and Robert Craig on the title page. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Peter Schoening (dated 1979) and by Dee Molenaar on the first blank page following the introduction. Also, the book has an original unsigned K2 bookplate designed/drawn by Dee Molenaar on the inside front cover. This book is signed by all team members except Colonel Ata-Utah and Arthur Gilky (who perished during the expedition). Items signed by all seven of these team members are rare. The least common team member signatures on any copy of K2 The Savage Mountain are those of Ata-Ullah and George Bell. Ata-Ulla lived in Pakistan and died in 1977. George Bell, a leading physicist and theoretical biologist, prominent with the Human Genome Project and earlier with nuclear reactor design/theory, was the first American team member to pass away (2000). Bell made the first ascent of Masherbrum, Yerupaja (did not summit), Salcantay, and several peaks in N. America. The book has generally clean covers, rubbing along spine edges and on front cover, spine crease, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages (other than team member signatures and inscriptions), solid binding, nothing loose or missing, no foxing. The book measures 208mm tall x 133mm, and has 394 pages, 36 b/w photos, 9 b/w portrait photos of team members, many Molenaar sketches, index. PHOTOS ARE OF ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED. Signed by Author(s).
