Er erhielt eine Anstellung als Lehrer in der Betriebsberufsschule Martin Hoop" in Johanngeorgenstadt-Neuoberhaus, der Zentralstelle für das sozialistische Bildungswesen des Ministeriums für Geologie in der DDR.Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Geologe und Leiter der Betriebssportgruppe des Deutschen Verbandes für Wandern, Bergsteigen und Orientierungslauf (DWBO) im VEB "Modesta" Johanngeorgenstadt galt sein Interesse bereits frühzeitig der Heimat- und Montangeschichte des sächsisch-böhmischen Erzgebirges. Zwischen 1993 und 2009 legte er mehrere Sachbücher zu diesem Thema vor. In seiner Funktion des Hauptwegewarts des Erzgebirgsvereins und Gründungsmitglied der Bergknappschaft Johanngeorgenstadt regte er gemeinsam mit Günther Adler die Anlegung des grenzüberschreitenden Anton-Günther-Weges an und gilt als einer des besten Kenner des westlichen Erzgebirges dies- und jenseits der Grenze. Ferner widmete er sich in seinen Schriften auch dem Steinwald in Franken und dem Kaiserwald in Böhmen, die er als aktiver Wanderer ausgiebig erkundet hat. Um so größere Bedeutung kommt dem Buch von Birgit Beck zu. Sie untersucht erstmals anhand…von Verfahren deutscher Kriegsgerichte während des Zweiten Weltkriegs den Umgang der Wehrmacht mit Sexualverbrechen in den von deutschen Truppen besetzten Gebieten. Ausgehend von den Voraussetzungen der deutschen Straf- und Militärgerichtsbarkeit zeigt die Autorin die rechtlichen Grundlagen für die Verfolgung von Sexualstraftaten deutscher Soldaten auf, beleuchtet im direkten Vergleich zwischen West- und Ostfront die Anklagen sowie die jeweiligen Tatumstände und analysiert die Urteile und die wechselnden Kriterien für die Strafbemessung. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht sie anschauliche Einblicke in den Ablauf der Verfahren: Anhand von ausgewählten Fällen stellt sie dar, wie sich Angeklagte, Opfer und Richter sowie Zeuginnen und Zeugen vor Gericht verhielten, welche Fragen gestellt und welche Antworten gegeben wurden. Bei der Ahndung der Straftaten stand die Frage im Mittelpunkt, inwieweit ein Soldat durch sein Vergehen zum einen die 'Manneszucht', also die Disziplin der Truppe, zum anderen das 'Ansehen' der Wehrmacht und zum dritten die jeweiligen Ziele der Besatzungspolitik gefährdet hatte. Je nach Kriegsschauplatz, militärischer Situation, besatzungspolitischen Absichten sowie abhängig von der Charakterisierung des Täters und von der Nationalität des Opfers kamen die Kriegsgerichte zu ganz unterschiedlichen Urteilen - ihre Spannweite reichte von Arrest und kurzen Gefängnisstrafen über langjährige Zuchthaushaft bis zur Todesstrafe. Deutlich wird, dass sexuelle Übergriffe besonders im Rahmen des Vernichtungskrieges gegen die Sowjetunion bagatellisiert und teilweise sogar geduldet wurden. Das Buch hinterfragt gängige Thesen über die strategische Funktion solcher Taten und zeichnet durch die Berücksichtigung der politischen, militärischen und gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen ein differenziertes Bild von Wehrmacht und sexueller Gewalt im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
