Original blue cloth, covers with bevelled edges. Front cover blind-titled against gilt background and decorated in maroon & green, with addition of "Halesowen Grammar School" in decorative gilt type above & below central decoration; rear with blindstamped ruled borders. Dark brown endpapers, Halesowen Grammar School prize bookplate dated 1886 on front pastedown. Untitled backstrip of unsightly appearance, being worn with loss at head & foot and along untidily split rear hinge. Front hinge moderately rubbed. Rear cover rubbed and lightly marked. Upper and lower edges of both front and rear covers a little rubbed, with a few minor nicks and bumps; outer corners worn. Front endpapers with lengthy split along hinge; white inner-facing sides of flyleaves at both front and rear a little spotted. No dust jacket called for. Binding showing wear, but still holding; contents for the most part clean and tight. FAIR, or excellent reading / working copy.

Decorative Cloth. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. 1881 though not dated. Size quarto, 10" tall, 46 pages. Mid brown cloth covered boards with titles on gilt frame surrounded by a leafy branch in green to the front cover and plain spine, attractive School Board for London prize gilt vignette on the rear cover. Condition good, the…binding is slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise very nice. There is foxing to the title page, contents page and first 3 text pages and also the last four text pages, the margins of the last colour plate and the publisher's advertisements and rear end-paper. The rest of the contents are quite clean, there is the odd spot or two to the margins of a couple of the plates but the plates are good, printed on different paper and tipped in to the book. With each plate there are excellent instructions on how to execute the sketch from start to finish and there are also vignettes as chapter headpieces which on the contents page are also recommended to the reader can be reproduced as further sketching lessons. The first edition of this particular issue.Publisher's ornate, gilt decorated,blue cloth, all edges gilt, bevelled boards, A scarcer variant from the usual scarlet and with a variant gilt decoration. , gilt extra by Burn and Co. and designed by Hayday, I belie…ve. Colour frontis, monochrome vignette title page and a further 15 chromolithographic plates . each having a printed protective tissue guard. Collates thus : [iv], 5-15, [3], [4]pp. facsimile of ms. of the poem,RARELY PRESENT. A complete copy with 32 pp of text if the blank versos are included. With the colour plates present in this issue,which are of high quality and charming also, with the "full many a flower " one outstanding. Rear board colour a little uneven, spine darkened and lettering dulled, corners of boards a trifle rubbed and extremities of spine chipped. Fore edge margin of one plate a bit frayed, as are some edges of the final 4pp facsimile. Originally a Gutter Percha binding, now firmly rebound with the inner hinges of the boards also strengthened with paper at the gutters. N.B. The border cloth design of the front cover is in a darker shade than the central section and the gilt thereon somewhat dulled. The elegant engraved "Drawing-Copies" range from "Neapolitan Craft" and "Fishing Smacks, Dieppe Harbour" to "Brighton Fishing-Boat", "Dutch Barges" and "Swedish Schooner". The Ayrshire-born Richard Pettigrew Leitch (1827-1882) served as Drawing Master to Queen Victoria and her children.
