Original black-titled RAF-blue cloth with flap 15x23cm. 94, (1)pp + 12 double-page colour sectional maps + Appendices I and II inserted loose in the back pocket, consecutively numbered pp82-89, complete as called for. The covers are very good, dulled to spine, and the interiors fine. This is the third of 3 known editions, the others published in 1923 and 1926. The printers code indicates 375 copies printed in July 1929 (p3). All 3 editions are extremely rare, not recorded on Worldcat, with Library Hub locating only the National Aerospace Library for this edition. This describes the difficult desert route, which had originally been conceived at the Middle East Conference in 1921 to accelerate the transport of people and mail to India and beyond, reinforcements from Palestine and Egypt to Iraq, and to train pilots in flying long distances. As the stretch between Amman and Baghdad was largely featureless, Chief of Staff Sir Hugh Trenchard initiated an innovative system to assist navigation and search for lost planes. Over an 8 week period, two teams, one starting from Cairo the other from Baghdad, painted a white line from Amman across the black lava of the Syrian Desert, which joined with a ploughed 470 mile furrow from Baghdad. They placed emergency landing strips every 25 miles (marked with whitewashed arrows these were labelled A-R in the Cairo Zone, I-X in the Baghdad Zone). (The furrow also unexpectedly increased ground freight). They made arrangements to hide fuel under the sand to prevent Bedouin herders from emptying the drums and taking the metal to fashion useful items such as knives, cups, mirrors and water bottles. Another team set up meteorological stations and rest houses, including at Rutbah Wells. The aircraft were suitably adapted with fabric covered wood frames, spare wheel, spare tropical radiator, 2 auxiliary fuel tanks, and 5 gallon drums of drinking water on the bomb rack. This guide assisted the pilots "in every way (on) the great length of the track, the severity of climatic conditions, the lack of water, the enormous extent and uniform appearance of the desert and the uncertainty of the weather in this area" (p3). It describes the route and its origins, ground characteristics, desert equipment, meteorology, wireless, forced landings, pilotage in bad weather when the Track has been lost, refuelling bases with illustrated instructions for the tanks, signals, and notes and precautions. The latter covers treatment of natives, noting Arabs "generally display a friendly attitude, especially to British personnel". There is a sample Log, useful Arab phrases, route report, distance and speed tables. The maps cover 12 sections on a 1 inch to 8 miles scale with notes for Heliopolis, Kantara, Moseifig, Rafa, Jericho, C, H, O, 8, V, II, Falujah, and Ramidi to Baghdad. Appendices list equipment for the DH9a light bomber used for policing and reconnaissance, and Vickers Victoria used as a troop and freight carrier.…

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Two complementary charts, both Preliminary Editions dated 20 Dec 1952, printed in blue on both sides of single unfolded leaves 21x27cm. Sheets such as this would normally be bound up into route books tailored to specific flights. These sheets appear to be unused, in near fine, lightly creased condition. The RAF built an airstrip at Salalah in Dhofar (in 1928 or by 1935 depending on the source) to support the Sultan of Oman. In the 1950s it became an important refuelling and staging post for Vickers Valetta flights from Khormaksar (Aden) to Mauripur (Karachi), until the latter closed in 1956. Aircraft based here participated in the Jebel Akhdar War during 1954-57. The fronts feature the approach chart showing the environs on a scale of 1/500K with section, notes, and approach marked. The backs have a plan of the landing strip on a scale of 1/25K with notes on lighting, special warnings in relation to the Monsoon and terrain, and radio facilities. …

Very good, neatly folded, with small area of dusting, and a single quite neatly drawn red crayon line tracing a route between Luqa (Malta) and Nicosia (Cyprus) on one of the two sides (the other side unmarked). Printed by No.2 Survey Production Centre (SPC) (Air), War Office, on 7 December 1960. This edition is dated 5 December 1960. It came months after the Turkish Coup and Cypriot independence, with the next edition indicated as due just weeks later, on 28 December 1960. It was issued during the major restructuring of British forces during 1959-61 that divided the Middle East Command into British Forces Arabian Peninsula (based at Aden) and Near East Command (based at Cyprus). RAF Cyprus had become especially important to protecting British interests after the Suez Crisis and withdrawal from Iraq and Egypt, with the RAF retaining significant strategic presence at other bases including Malta and Nicosia. About centred on Istanbul, this sheet's coverage is bounded by Bucharest (N), Ain Zalah (E), Cairo (S), and Malta (W) on a 1/4M scale. Details include settlements and other geographical locations, and a dense network of named controlled air sectors, spaces and corridors with navigation and communication data, and the zones allocated to RAF Cyprus and RAF Malta. The Sectors included are Baghdad, Damascus, Ankara, Istanbul, Nicosia, Bucharest, Athens, Cairo, Malta, Brindisi, Rome, Italy, Belgrade and Zagreb.…

No Binding. Condizione: Good. Two very rare documents, (2), (2)pp, each printed on official British Government Crown and Stationery Office (SO) watermarked foolscap. Good with single horizontal fold, creased and tanned with some spotting and a couple of short closed tears. Undated c1941-42. No author or publisher is indicated, but they appear to have been issued as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, also known as the Empire Air Training Scheme, or "The Plan". This remains the largest scheme of its kind, covering almost half the pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, air gunners, wireless operators and flight engineers in the RAF, Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, RAAF, RCAF, and RNZAF. Parallel to this, the South African Air Force ran a programme for its own aircrew and other Allied air forces. This pair of cross-referring notes informs pilots about dust and sandstorms encountered along the route to India via the Western (Libyan) Desert, Arabia and the Gulf. NOTE 2 explains the conditions necessary for these to occur in the Western Desert, with Mediterranean cold fronts being the "the most frequent cause", and various types of depressions including over Palestine and Syria. NOTE 3 adds observations on sandstorms in Winter, Spring and Summer driven by the switch between the NE and SW Monsoon over the Arabian Sea and India, the Shamal over western Persia, the Sirocco over Palestine, Syria and western Iraq, etc. Sandstorms can extend further east along the route to Persia and Baluchistan, while dust haze extends SE over the Gulf to Bahrain and possibly beyond. This would have provided important practical information to the RAF in navigating the region, with the British retaining significant political, military and economic interests in the Gulf and South Arabia post-Suez, with several RAF bases forming part of their defence. ATC Charts demarcate airspace and reporting points to support navigation and communications during the flight. As they do not show international boundaries or many other geographical features, they include a warning not to use them for plotting purposes. At their broadest level, they divide coverage into Flight Information Regions (FIR), whose boundaries at times follow international boundaries though stated not authoritatively, and mostly tend to be named after prominent locations within them. In this case the FIRs are Teheran, Bahrain, Aden, Baghdad, Damascus, Easternmed, Istanbul, Khartoum, Cairo, Fort Lamy, Malta, etc. Within the FIRs are Control Zones, Control Areas, and Advisory Areas. Airways and Advisory Routes are drawn as a complex web of interconnecting labelled air corridors intended to maintain smooth traffic flow and keep pilots within the authorised areas. No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. A larger than usual wooden wall plaque / mess shield 175x253mm. Very good, slightly dulled, with the supplier's ticket to the back (York Insignia Ltd). In recognition of Bahrain's maritime heritage, the emblem centres on a dhow at sea with St Christopher's staff to its sail, encircled by the Station's name and gold laurels, above which the Queen's crown, and below the Station's motto "In Sole Laborate" (Work in the Sun). It is undated but between 1958 and 1963. RAF Station Bahrain (or Bahrein) was founded in 1943, received its official heraldic emblem in June 1958, was renamed to RAF Muharraq in December 1963, and relinquished upon independence in 1971. During 1958-63 it was involved in airlifting support to King Hussein of Jordan following the Iraq Coup (1958), reconnaissance, supply drops and bombing runs during the Jebel Akhdar War (1954-59), a launching pad and nerve centre during the Kuwait Crisis / Operation Vantage (1961), and a staging post to reinforce British Forces during the Aden Emergency (1963). A unique set of 50 original b/w aerial views from 1922-29, @20x16cm, most with detailed captions and notes in the print, some with RAF ink stamps and captions to versos. Most VG to near fine, some chipped to corners, one with tape repair to verso, one 2-hole punched, one with extraction residue to verso, one heavily annotated. The earliest date to between the Cairo Conference in March 1921 which entrusted Iraq's security to the RAF, and enacting that plan via the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of October 1922. This cost saving measure transferring responsibility away from the Army, involved creating new landing grounds in defended areas, which negated the need for vulnerable supply lines. The RAF was asked to deal with multiple threats to the new Hashemite monarchy from Kurdistan (then in a state of rebellion), Turkish expansionism, the Shia, and the Sultanate of Nejd, and conduct punitive bombing strikes for non payment of tax. Its aerial surveys produced photos such as these to make maps to conduct its operations supported by armoured cars and Levies on the ground. As much of the threat in the early 1920s came from the north, many photos cover Kurdistan, with other areas including Diyala, Nasiriyah, Kirkuk, Basrah, Baghdad and Nineveh. Subjects include Landing Grounds (LG) and nearby settlements, villages, a bombing raid, police on the march, terrain, Bedu, and new hospitals. Captions give location, date, time, altitude, focal length and coordinates. Some credit the Squadron responsible, with many earlier ones naming 84 Squadron or Air HQ. Years of speculation about Warburton's fate came to an end in 2002, when his remains were found with his aircraft, buried about 2 yards deep in a field near the Bavarian village of Egling an der Paar, 34 miles west of Munich. According to witnesses, the aircraft fell there on 12 April 1944, around 11:45. One of the propellers had bullet holes in it, which suggests that Warburton had been shot down.
