Ciascun popolo ha i suoi particolari costumi che ne ritraggono l'indole, anzi formano tra l'uno e l'altro l'insuperabile diga che li separa. Per altro la maggior parte fra essi, sono così riposti, che per nulla all'occhio dello straniero possono trasparire e lasciar scorgere la bontà o tristizia che contengono anche s'egli v'intenda con guardo scrutatore e sagace, senza che il cittadino, cresciuto con essi e da essi guidato, non ne palesi tutto il maraviglioso e misterioso magistero, non ne presenti la maggiore o minore verisimile origine. Ma che varrà questa opera del cittadino per presentare allo straniero, o a chi ne sia ignaro, il proprio costume, se questo, pure nella esecuzione eccellente, viene ignudo di ogni apparato che ne svolga i secreti e alletti l'immaginazione altrui come la figura alletta lo sguardo? Sarà come la statua di Pigmalione cui manca ancora la vitale scintilla. . ad imitar la natura morale solo conviene il racconto; perocchè, come pel mezzo de' primi si parla allo sguardo, così solo per mezzo del secondo si parla potentemente all'immaginazione mercè lo svolgimento di una favola modellata sul vero; sì che la loro concorrenza par necessaria per ritrarre popolo, dramma e vita di esso, val dire il costume ed il suo culto. L'imaginazione in tal guisa non ha d'uopo di creare, e solo intende a dilettarsi, ammirandone le bellezze o ricercandone i falli. Però abbiam creduto solo la svariatezza del racconto convenire alla svariatezza e singolarità del costume per mostrarlo in tutta la sua pienezza: il pubblico giudichi e compatisca ove rinvenga il difetto.
