Wilhelm von Rahden (Breslavia, 1793 - Friedenstein, 1860) forjó su educación militar combatiendo en las filas del ejército prusiano a las tropas napoleónicas. Más tarde se especializó en topografía en la Escuela Superior del Ejército y estuvo al servicio del zar de Rusia y del rey Guillermo I de Holanda. Fue en Londres donde se decidiría a combatir por la causa de don Carlos en España, cuya experiencia recoge el presente volumen, el cual, publicado en 1840, combina los ingredientes de un libro de memorias y los de una biografía de límites no del todo definidos. De un lado, Rahden narra en primera persona su experiencia española desde que en abril de 1837 se incorporó al ejército carlista del Norte como coronel de ingenieros, hasta su salida durante los últimos días de 1839 con la misión de entrevistarse con don Carlos en Bourges. Durante este período participó en la Expedición Real y fue testigo del ascenso al poder de Maroto, viajó por la Cataluña carlista del conde de España y llegó al Maestrazgo para ponerse a las órdenes de Cabrera. De otro, el autor elabora la biografía de este último, el jefe carlista más importante del momento, a partir de informaciones y testimonios recogidos durante el viaje a los que suma su propia experiencia. Su condición de extranjero dota de curiosidad y detalle al relato y hace de este libro, hasta ahora inédito en castellano, un testimonio vivaz de lo que sucedió tras las filas carlistas.…
