Los Modi fueron inicialmente un conjunto de dieciseis dibujos realizados por Giulio Romano que representaban otras tantas parejas en diferentes posturas sexuales. En 1524 fueron grabados al buril por Marcantonio Raimondi y sirvieron para ilustrar una serie de sonetos erótico-burlescos de Pietro Aretino. La edición inicial fue secuestrada y destruida por orden papal, y sólo quedan de ella algunos ecos o trasuntos visuales posteriores: el ejemplar mutilado de una tosca edición del siglo XVI y las copias que hizo en el XIX el conde de Waldeck. Esta es la primera vez que se publican ordenadamente estos y otros materiales junto a los poemas de Pietro Aretino. Tambien es una primicia el estudio de todo ello dentro de la cultura artística renacentista. Los Modi constituyeron un hito en la historia de la representación del cuerpo humano y merece la pena rescatarlos del estrecho marco que le habían venido prestando hasta ahora las historias del erotismo.…
