In den 1970er-Jahren ging er unter anderem mit Chico Hamilton, Billy Cobham, Gil Evans (The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix 1974) und Jeremy Steig auf Tournee und wirkte auf mehreren Alben des Trompeters Enrico Rava mit. 1974 veröffentlichte er bei dem Label ECM sein erstes eigenes Album Timeless mit Jan Hammer an den Keyboards und Jack DeJohnette am Schlagzeug. Bei letzterem spielte er Ende der 1970er in der Band New Directions.
