Married Douglas MacLeod.Douglas MacLeod (1901-1970) Harley Street obstetrician and gynaecologists. Born on 9 May 1901. Few families can have devoted so many members to the art of surgery. His great-grandfather, John MacLeod, MD was Surgeon to the Madras Presidency. His grand-father, Alexander Charles MacLeod (1819-1914), father, Charles Edward Alexander MacLeod (1867-1939), and elder brother, Alexander Cameron MacLeod (1899-1970, see previous entry), were all Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons. His grand-father was also a member of the Royal College of Physicians. He was educated at Haileybury and the Middlesex Hospital, and qualified in 1925, having distinguished himself as a rugger player, playing for the hospital, Middlesex County and the Harlequins. After success in the MRCP and a medical registrarship he spent a year as resident at Chelsea Hospital for Women, returning to the Middlesex as obstetric and gynaecological registrar in 1929. There is no doubt that Victor Bonney had a great influence on Douglas MacLeods career and training, and he was a devoted and brilliant pupil. Few gynaecologists achieve Fellowship of all three Royal Colleges and become a Master of Surgery. He was appointed to the consultant staff of St Marys Hospital, and throughout his teaching career he was immensely popular with students. He was also appointed to the staff of Queen Charlottes Maternity Hospital, as well as to Putney and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. He was in the Emergency Medical Service from 1939 to 1945, and Commandant at St Marys. He brought out a booklet of instruction for the medical officers who had to deal with casualties. MacLeod was Hunterian Professor, Royal College of Surgeons in 1946, and became President of the Obstetric Section of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1958/59. He made many contributions to his specialty, and was co-author of Ten teachers of midwifery and Diseases of women as well as Queen Charlottes Textbook of obstetrics. With Sir Charles Read he edited Eden and Lockyers Textbook of gynaecology, and with John Howkins he brought out the last edition of Bonneys Gynaecological surgery. Apart from his academic brilliance and his dexterity and delicacy of touch in surgical technique, Douglas MacLeod had the gift of making innumerable friends. Few could resist his charm of manner, his graceful appearance and finally his diffidence and shyness. He could not help becoming famous and successful, but he retained his modest character and was particularly well-loved by all his colleagues. His passion for music was well-known, and the visitor to his house in Edwardes Square might catch a few notes of Bach or Brahms, his favourite composers, but he was too modest to perform in front of his friends. Douglass other recreation was fishing on the river Frome at his country retreat at the Mill at Stratton in Dorset. In 1933 he married Lesley Francis daughter of the late Martine Ronaldson by whom he had two sons and one daughter. He died suddenly in his consulting rooms in Harley Street on 27 January 1970; he was survived by his family. He became a member of the Highland Society of London in 1938 and was a Past Hon. Vice-President of the London Branch of the Clan MacLeod Society in 1939. POSTAGE: PLEASE NOTE - This is a heavy item and may require additional postage for overseas deliveries. Card Covers. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. Rare ballet book.A thin volume published in a limited edition of 350 numbered copies (this is copy no. 50), with six visual art works, twelve photographs, and five pages of text by Cyril W. Beaumont describing Idzikowski in various roles and as a presence in ballet. A sketch by Randolph Schwabe shows the dancer in costume, seated in his dressing room. Following are four colour images of Idzikowski in ballet poses, reproductions of paintings by Vera Willoughby. Then, there are twelve publicity photographs are of him in various costumes of his choreographed roles. In original binding, now distressed and disbound. It is now a loose-leaf folder with all pages present and in good condition. There is some light foxing, but not affecting the colour illus. or the photographs. Corners bumped. An easy repair could be effected. There is an interesting insc. on the first blank, at first, I thought that it might be S.I.'s signature, but now I think not. A ballet enthusiast may well be able to identify the two names/signature. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Schwabe, Randolph and Willoughby, Vera (illustratore).

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Illustrated Edition. With 24 collotype illustrations by Randolph Schwabe including a frontispiece captioned "she yielded quite silently." First illustrated edition, first printing. One of 751 copies signed by W. Somerset Maugham and Randolph Schwabe on the limitation page, this being number 205. Publisher's maize buckram cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt, beveled edges, top edge gilt, and rag paper; with the original cream-colored dust jacket split in two parts, with most of the spine missing except for a fragment of it; in the publisher's brick-red slipcase, with paper label featuring frontispiece illustration affixed to front panel. Fine book; very good slipcase, with wear to edges (some separation to edges near mouth of slipcase), and some soiling to titles label. Overall, a remarkably well-preserved copy of the book. Stott A21d. Of Human Bondage is a bildungsroman featuring the protagonist Philip Carey, a club-footed orphan who is raised by his religious aunt and uncle. From a young age, Carey yearns for adventure and moves to Paris to pursue a career in art. Subsequently, he moves to London to study medicine, where he meets the androgynous Mildred, with whom he begins a torturous love affair that will forever alter the course of his life. A strongly autobiographical novel (Maugham's formative insecurity was a stammer rather than a clubfoot), Of Human Bondage is considered Maugham's masterpiece. The book was adapted into three films in 1934, 1946, and 1964, starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, Paul Henreid and Eleanor Parker, and Laurence Harvey and Kim Novak as Philip and Mildred, respectively. Schwabe, Randolph (illustratore). Signed.
