Se o Modernismo brasileiro deu maior autonomia aos meios de expressão: libertou o idioma de gramaticalismos inúteis; desamarrou a poesia em versos livres, em vez de os mesmos ficarem metidos numa armação silábica, com rima obrigatória , a Antropofagia foi sua radicalização e busca por espalhar-se para além dos grandes centros ur-banos, como o Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Raul Bopp personificava este ideal: gostava do Brasil, do interior do país. Ainda estudante, cursou a faculdade de Direito em diferentes capitais (Porto Alegre, Recife, Belém e Rio de Janeiro) e sempre que podia corria o interior em busca de festas folclóricas. Foi, com Oswald de Andrade, editor da Revista de Antropofagia. Sua experiência no Movimento Antropofágico foi fundamental para que escrevesse Cobra Norato (um dos poemas mais importantes da literatura brasileira, também publicado pela José Olympio), no qual trouxe pela primeira vez a Amazônia para o centro das atenções. Seria, posteriormente, diplomata brasileiro. Vida e morte da Antropofagia inicia com a história da família desse neto de alemães radicados no Rio Grande do Sul. Bopp descreve o desenvolvimento das idéias modernistas que culminaram na efervescência e no declínio do Movimento, que acabou, segundo relata, com de um changé de dames geral . Movimento rápido, porém de gran-de força: O impulso da caudal modernista (1922) deu lugar, alguns anos mais tarde (1928), a uma subcorrente de ideias, na própria cidade de São Paulo. Essa agitação no mundo das letras, que surgiu com um sentido ferozmente brasileiro, denominou-se Antropofagia. Foi um movimento animado de um espírito jovem, independente, burlão, negativista. Com sátiras audaciosas, provocou uma derrubada de valores, de mera casca literária, sem cerne. Sacudiu hierarquias inconsistentes. Assinalou uma época.
