Original publisher's black cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. 6 1/2" x 9." Partially unpaginated, c. 120 pages (Introduction is nineteen pages; the facsimile of The Desert Daisy is about 101 pages), complete. Many black-and-white illustrations, complete. The Desert Daisy was composed by Wells sometime between 1878 and 1889 when he was either 12 or 13 years old. The Desert Daisy is a precursor to present-day comic books and features a humorous story originally handwritten in cursive by Wells that is accompanied by equally comedic illustrations drawn by Wells. In his Introduction, Gordon N. Ray briefly describes the early years of Wells's childhood and gives some background information on The Desert Daisy. The Introduction is followed by the facsimile reproduction of The Desert Daisy which comprises black-and-white scans of Wells's original manuscript housed in the University of Illinois Library. This book is the third in a series of chapbooks by Beta Phi Mu. Back colophon ("No. 300" is handwritten in black ink; the rest of the text is printed in black ink): "No. 300; This book, including the facsimile reproductions, was manufactured by the photofact offset process by The Lakeside Press, R. hardcover. 6 x 9 inches. hardcover. 159 pages. Edited by Tanselle, G. Thomas. Printed by Heritage Letterpress of Charlotte, North Carolina. When Gordon Ray delivered the Lyell Lectures at Oxford in 1985, he chose as his subject the Art Deco book illustrations and bindings produced in France in the 1920s. This topic was not a surprising choice, for he had previously written magisterial annotated catalogues, largely based on his own collection, of British illustrated books from 1790 to 1914 and of French illustrated books from 1700 to 1914. His Lyell Lectures formed a natural continuation of the latter and gave him the opportunity to express his views on still another area in which, through his collecting and research, he had become expert. He accompanied his lectures with 183 slides, the majority of them in color, and those illustrations are in fact the reason that the lectures have not been published until now: the expense of producing so many illustrations was too daunting for the publishers that Ray approached. Today a happy solution to this problem is available in the form of digital presentation on the internet, and Ray's work is now being offered in a combination of printed and electronic forms. The verbal text of his lectures is letterpress printed in this present volume (supplemented by eight plates, showing striking examples of the work of the major figures discussed), and all of the available illustrations are being published on the website of the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 8vo (24 cm), [8], 159 pp., 8 plates. Publisher's sage-grey cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine, publisher's Art Deco-style gilt device on the upper board (minor shelf-wear). First separate edition, reprinted with corrections and three additional indexes from Studies in Bibliography, vol. 55 (2002). This volume presents the text of Gordon N. Ray's James P. R. Lyell Lectures in Bibliography, delivered at the University of Oxford in 1985 and constituting the last major work of the distinguished bibliographer, collector, Thackeray scholar, and longtime president of the Guggenheim Foundation. Drawing extensively upon Ray's celebrated collection of French illustrated books--later bequeathed to the Pierpont Morgan Library--as well as research undertaken in the Beinecke Library, the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and important private collections, the lectures offer the first substantial English-language study of the French Art Deco illustrated book. Ray examines the emergence of the livre d'art during the 1920s, analysing the close collaboration between publishers, artists, typographers, printers, and binders that transformed the illustrated book into one of the defining artistic achievements of the Art Deco period. Four extended chapters are devoted to the principal figures of the movement: George Barbier, François-Louis Schmied, and Jean-Émile Laboureur as illustrators, and Pierre Legrain as the revolutionary designer of modern bindings, with broader discussion of Art Deco bookbinding and the work of Rose Adler and other leading binders. The eight plates reproduce notable examples by Robert Bonfils, Barbier, Schmied, Laboureur, and Legrain from the collections of Princeton University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Beinecke Library, the Pierpont Morgan Library, and the New York Public Library. G. Thomas Tanselle's substantial introductory essay provides a biographical and critical assessment of Ray's career as scholar, bibliographer, and collector, reconstructs the history of the Lyell Lectures, and places them within the literature on French book arts. The volume concludes with a bibliography, chronological indexes of illustrated books and bindings cited, a list of illustrations, and a general index. An authoritative and elegantly produced contribution to the study of twentieth-century French illustrated books, Art Deco design, and modern artistic bookbinding, and an enduring tribute to one of the twentieth century's foremost collector-bibliographers.…
