Arte / Stampa / Poster Copia autografata
Image size 202 x 273 mm. On laid paper with watermark of an eagle. St. Cecilia is depicted singing, with an angel seated opposite her at the organ. The music to a complete 5-part motet by Dirk Raymundi is clearly illustrated on two pages of an open book resting on an ornate eagle-decorated lectern placed in the near background between St. Cecilia and the organist. The text of the motet commences "Fiat cor meum et corpus meum immaculatum, ut non confudar" (Let my heart and my body be undefiled, that I may not be confounded), a chant for the Feast of St. Cecilia. Slightly worn; browned; trimmed within platemark, not affecting image but cropping four columns of text in Latin below image, "VIRGO, fida Dei locus" signed "D.R.L.D." [Daniel Raymundi from Liège]; small hole to upper right portion, just touching one of the organ pipes; laid down to mounting sheet, browned at margins from early adhesive. Rare. Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish Engravings, Etchings and Woodcuts, Ca. 1450-1700, 305. Kinsky: A History of Music in Pictures, 152-3. Goodfriend: Prints and Drawings of Musical Interest, 26. British Museum number 1937,0915.113. Raymundi is cited in Sieffert: Niederländische Bild-Motetten vom Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts (Netherlandish Picture Motets of the Late 16th Century Heft II, pp. 12-14. "To judge from his few extant works, [Raymundi] was an able composer with a certain gift for melody. Three motets of his, for eight voices and continuo, Ecce panis angelorum, Homo quidam and Tantum ergo are extant in the Grand livre de choeur de Saint-Lambert (B-Lc) and one five-part motet, Fiat cor meum, is edited by J.A.L. de Lafage in Diphtérographie musicale (Paris, 1864), 487." José Quintin in Grove Music Online "The music-playing Cecilia was an ideal theme for engraving a pictorial motet. . On the eve of her wedding, Cecilia prays to God to keep her heart and her body pure and immaculate. . It is one of the few surviving pieces composed by Raymundi, who also wrote on the theory of music and composed literary pieces - the four quatrains under the picture were probably written by him. Cecilia is shown singing fervently as she prays; the angel, her celestial friend . is accompanying her on the organ, and another angel is operating the bellows behind the organ. . The saint is wearing the garland of roses from Paradise, as well as the martyr's crown. . The lectern on which the choir book showing the five parts is set is supported by a pelican. The bird pecking at its own breast to nourish its four offspring is a common symbol of Christ's self-sacrificing love. Cecilia's bethrothed, Valerian, is entering the chamber from the left, looking on at the scene in astonishment. The inscription over the door also serves as the title of the scene, 'Precatio D. Caeciliae pro virginitate conservanda orantis' (Prayer of St. Cecilia to Prerserve her Virginity). Vignau-Wilberg: Music for a While. Music and Dance in 16th-Century Prints, pp. 180-182, catalogue no. 69. Sadeler was a noted Flemish copperplate engraver. "His works include a number of devotional music publications. . These engravings, sometimes known as 'picture-motets', show angels or biblical figures singing and playing from partbooks and may have been published in support of the Counter-Reformation. . The composers, artists and engravers were all Flemish and these fine engravings, with the music complete and legible, bear witness to the thriving artistic life in Antwerp at the end of the 16th century. . They are important in their own right as particularly beautiful and unusual examples of early music engraving." Susan Bain in Grove Music Online De Vos, a noted Flemish painter, executed numerous designs for prints and book illustrations. "Since 1876 many musicologists have pointed to the significance of picture motets as music records and their role in the history of music typography. Picture motets would also be important to the reconstruction of earlier forms of music performance. Lately they have also received a more general cultural-historical significance: picture motets are privileged remnants of music iconography, a very young branch of music science. . The music scores shown in picture motets are at least as important as the other more common music prints of the same period. Not only are they complete compositions, picture motets also are the only sources in which those works have been preserved. . In addition, picture motets are technical 'primeurs' because with the music scores engraved in the illustrations on the copper plates they precede by a few decades the advent of engraved music prints." Bossuyt: Ancdreas Pevernage . Bildmotetten, p. 13. Among the very earliest examples of music engraving. Signed.
