He continues: 'I saw Streatfield [sic] from afar the other night at Bach's mass in B. Minor. He was magnificent in evening dress next to Claude Phillips even more magnificent.' He concludes: 'I expect you Wednesday afternoon at Rossetti Studios, Flood St. Chelsea, accompanied by a bag full of magnificent gowns.' Sir Claude Phillips (1846-1924) was an influential art historian and critic with the Daily Telegraph and Manchester Guardian, and would retire from his position as first keeper of the Wallace Collection in the same year as Lytton's letter. 'Streatfield' is clearly the musicologist and critic Richard Alexander Streatfeild (1866-1919).
