Le premier feuillet de garde a anciennement été découpé laissant place è une fenètre dans cette page.Ce poème fut publé en 1594,après la mort de l'auteur et traduit en espagnol en 1624. Edition originale rare de la première traduction française de ce poème épique portugais du XVIème siècle. Elle ne connaitra qu'une seule autre publication, dans la Revue lusitanienne, en 1852. Cette revue était dirigée par Ortaire Fournier dont il était également le seul rédacteur. Heronimo Corte-Real (Lisbone è 1533-Evora 1588 ou 1593) "avait embrassé la carrière des armes. Après avoir été témoin de la vie molle et somptueuse que ses compatriotes menaient en Asie, il le fut aussi des derniers efforts que fit leur courage dans les camps d'Afrique, è cette funeste bataille d'Alcaces-Kebir, oè périt la fleur de la noblesse portugaise , et le roi lui-mème, Dom Sébastien. Corte-Real déploya dans cette journée tout ce que la valeur è de plus brillant ; mais ce fut en vain, il tomba aux mains des Africains. Ayant recouvré sa liberté è l'époque du rachat général des prisonniers, il revint dans sa patrie. Dès lors, il voua toute son existence au culte des muses. Doué d'une imagination de feu, il éprouvait pour la poésie, la musique et la peinture ce penchant irrésistible qui présage les grands talents. Il mourut en 1593. Le recueil de ses ouvrages poétique est considérable. On y remarque trois poèmes qui sont du genre épique : 1°Le naufrage de Sépulveda ; 2° Le second siège de Diu ; 3° La mort du roi Séastien. Le premier est le plus fameux. Il a pour sujet les malheurs de deux époux, qui ont fourni è Camoens quelques vers admirables, et un épisode intéressant au poète Brundan. Il s'agit de Sépulveda et de Lianor de Sè qui, après s'ètre unis aux Indes, s'embarquent pour revenir en Europe, font naufrage et sont jetés, avec leurs enfants et leur suite, sur une plage déserte, oè ils expirent consumés par la faim." Inocêncio III, 262: "JERONYMO CORTE-REAL, Senhor do morgado de Palma, e Capitão-mór de uma armada nos mares da India, onde militava pelos annos de 1571, regressando para Lisboa pouco tempo depois porquanto já aqui se achava, ao que parece, em 1574. Nasceu provavelmente não longe do anno 1540. A sua naturalidade é, quanto eu posso julgar, ainda duvidosa. Alguns o deram nascido em Evora o P. João Baptista de Castro, não sei com que fundamento, affirma no Mappa de Portugal que fôra natural de Lisboa e Barbosa no tomo IV da Bibl. colloca o seu nome entre os dos auctores cuja patria se ignora. Diz-se que morrêra nas propriedades do seu morgado em 1593. Além da merecida fama que adquiriu de poeta distincto, obteve tambem entre os seus contemporaneos a de mui habil na arte da pintura. Consta o Cerco de Diu de vinte e um cantos, em versos hendecasyllabos soltos. Na opinião dos criticos este poema tem merito pela abundancia e belleza de suas comparações, quasi sempre frizantes e originaes pelas suas descripções, que denunciam no poeta um talento e vocação especial para o genero descriptivo e finalmente pelo vigor do colorido, e fogo militar, que alardêa nas descripções dos combates. A linguagem e em geral pura, e elegante porém o estylo nem sempre é tão poetico como seria para desejar por isso descáe muitas vezes em modos de dizer rasteiros, e menos dignos da magestade da epopéa, e da poesia elevada. Sahiu traduzido em verso castelhano por Fr. Pedro de Rodillas, e foi impresso em Alcalá, l597. Enc. Jerónimo Corte-Real (ca. 1533-1588), poeta e pintor do humanismo renascentista, natural de Lisboa, cuja obra mais célebre, "Sucesso do segundo cerco de Diu" (Lisboa, 1574), foi dedicada ao rei D. Sebastião. O seu poema Felississima victoria., em quinze cantos, composto em espanhol, narra a batalha naval de Lepanto, ocorrida em 1571, entre as forças da Liga Cristã, liderada por D. João da Áustria (filho bastardo de Carlos V ) e a armada turca, sob o comando de Ali Pasha. A edição, quase inteiramente impressa em itálico em papel muito fino, é ilustrada com 15 xilogravuras alusivas (80x105 mm.), acompanhadas de tantos capitéis históricos, no início de cada canto.
