Now universally known as 'STC,' it has become indispensable to historians, literary scholars, and bibliographers, whose work involves printed sources before the Civil War. This second part of the second revised edition (I-Z) was the first to be published in 1976, while Volume I covering A-H was first published in 1980; it was followed by a third volume, containing the addenda and supplementary materials.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 3 volumes, 4to (31.5 cm), LIII, 620 pp; XI, 494 pp; XIX, 405 pp. Publisher's cloth (dust jacket of the volume III only, bookplates, dust jacket slightly stained and frayed at extremities, small stain on the frond board of the vol. 2). This is the second edition of STC, a revision of the initial 1927 edition, undertaken in 1946 by F. S. Ferguson and W. A. Jackson and completed by Katharine F. Pantzer. Volume 2 was published in 1976, volume 1 in 1986, and volume 3 in 1991. "STC was instantly recognized as a major reference source for the scholarly world, in libraries, bookshops, and university departments. Its initials set the fashion for acronyms for such works that has grown and flourished since. Reference to it ipso facto improved the standard of identification of early English books. Gradually, not only the book professionals but students of literature and, subsequently, theology and history, began to realize the formidable strengths of the implement that had been put into their hands." (from the preface.) Volume 3 of the present edition breaks new ground in providing annotated indexes of printers and publishers and places of business in London and elsewhere. It also adds, in a series of appendices, up-to-date summaries of critical aspects of the organization of the London book trade. (Breslauer & Folter 156).
