Descriptive llustrated catalogue of the Museum of Practical Geology's vast collection of Roman-era British pottery and porcelain. Second edition. In brown cloth binding. With a frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations.Contemporary inscription from previous owner to front free endpaper, dated 1875.A comprehensive catalogue of the collection of Roman-era British pottery and porcelain at the Museum of Practical Geology, London. Originally published in 1855 by the museum's founder, Sir Henry de la Beche, the preface states that the text was "rapidly sold out", soon becoming "both scarce and dear". This later edition from De la Beche's predecessor, important geologist Trenham Reeks, and assistant-curator Frederick William Rudler lists the updates to the collection as well as contemporary context, particularly regarding the manufactory of porcelain at Stratford-le-Bow. In brown cloth binding. Contemporary inscription from previous owner to front free endpaper, dated 1875. Externally, reasonably smart with slight creasing and the odd mark to boards. Rubbing has resulted in minor loss of cloth along edges and more noticeable peeling of the cloth from board to the bottom corner of the rear board. With significant loss of cloth to spine. Internally, firmly bound, although damage to spine means front board more delicate. Bright and clean copy with the exception of light spotting, more prominent to the first and last few pages. Good. book.

Franklin 3269 (citing 1855 edition); Solon page 101: "The pottery and porcelain of other nations having been summarily dealt with in the preliminary chapters, th exclusive attention of the writers was bestowed upon the factories of Great Britain and their productions. Accordingly, every group of English pottery received a separate treatment, each section being prefaced with a well digested historical notice. The important manufactory and the modest pot-works, the vase of costly china and the rough porringer of Staffordshire, had their history told with the same exactness and reliability . This small handbook has done more to spread the taste for English ceramics than many volumes of more ambitious pretensions." Uncommon.
