Originally published in 1855 by the museum's founder, Sir Henry de la Beche, the preface states that the text was "rapidly sold out", soon becoming "both scarce and dear". This later edition from De la Beche's predecessor, important geologist Trenham Reeks, and assistant-curator Frederick William Rudler lists the updates to the collection as well as contemporary context, particularly regarding the manufactory of porcelain at Stratford-le-Bow.
