Reik, brings Hobbes's biography up to date with recent scholarship, including in her study many previously unknown Hobbes-related manuscripts of his time. A careful reconstruction of Hobbes's hitherto ignored early work leads Reik to propose a theory of continuity among the philosopher's political, scientific, and literary work. She demonstrates that Hobbes did not suddenly relinquish the humanistic interests of his early years to become the scientific philosopher who wrote Leviathan, but, rather, that his political theories evolved from his interest in the rhetorical and historical concerns characteristic of Tudor humanism.
