James Leonard Reinsch (June 28, 1908 - May 9, 1991) was a broadcasting executive who became president and CEO of COX Communications. He assisted the White House Press Secretary office in 1945, during the transition from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to President Harry Truman, and advised Winston Churchill on his 1946 "Iron Curtain" speech. In March 1973, Reinsch was presented the coveted Gold Medal award from the International Radio and Television Society. He was a member of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors from 1979 to 1985. In September 2003 the Library of American Broadcasting named Reinsch as one of the "First Fifty Giants of Broadcasting". In 1944, the author became the radio director of the Democratic National Conventions and presidential campaigns on radio--then on television--and held that position until 1969. He had the ear of four presidents: Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson, whom he advised on how best to communicate their ideas over the airwaves. After each election campaign, he returned to his first love--broadcasting. From his unique vantage point, the author examines all the conventions and elections up to and include 1984, and make important suggestions about how America can improve the election process. Derived from a Kirkus review: An always intriguing and often cynical behind, the-rostrum look at getting the "media message" across, by the man who was director of radio and television for Democratic presidents and presidential hopefuls from FDR to LBJ. Most readers will find Reinsch's memories revealing, even while being disturbed by his blatant espousal of the proposition that image rather than content is the determining factor in measuring the success of a presidential candidate's media appearances. He apparently sees no irony in the fact that he was delighted when a slight leg injury rendered Richard Nixon uncomfortable and fidgety during one of his 1960 debates with John Kennedy, and yet screamed "Foul" when the Nixon forces, hoping to counteract their candidate's tendency to perspire profusely under the TV lights, managed to lower the studio thermostats to 60 degrees during a subsequent confrontation. Though he makes no mention of it, Reinsch seems to have moved somewhat to the right as the years passed. He is enormously impressed with the sophistication and polish of Ronald Reagan's handling of the electronic media. No matter where their political sympathies lie, readers are certain to be swept along by this frank and unapologetic reminiscence.
