Spells, representing secret formulas, are essential elements in any Taoist exorcist performance. In most cases, the spells are unique as they reflect the… pantheon and the purpose of the exorcism in question. There are some standard titles that recur, such as consecration spells for amulets or spells to employ thunder gods. They reflect the overall state of the literary collections entitled Great Rituals . They were collected in comprehensive titles such as A Corpus of Taoist Rituals from the 14th century. Very few individual titles of spells persisted throughout the centuries from the T'ang- to the Ming dynasty, and the enigmatic Spell Lord Wood is one of them. The wording of the title itself appears variously in extended versions. In the course of history, even the text of the spell has been partially altered, either expanded or shortened, while keeping some key phrases and the name of a mysterious Lord Wood as the characteristic element. A Taoist Enigma examines various editions of the spell and discusses its scope of application, while the uncertainties associated with the enigmatic spell "Lord Wood" are highlighted in passing. We do not know who, at what time and for what reason, either extended or abbreviated the spell. How should one deal with such an oscillating text of Taoist exorcism that must have been a professional secret? Reiter presents a study of Taoist exorcist devices that in Heavenly Masters Taoism in the past and even today are dispensable for exorcist rituals. It focusses on exorcism that mainly was performed for the individual client. Sometimes large-scale…liturgies were required, but often less-demanding ritual efforts sufficed. The study relies on the collections A Corpus of Taoist Rituals and Pearls Inherited from the Sea of Rituals in the Ming Taoist Canon. Reiter presents an exorcist tradition of Thunder Magic Rituals from Hunan-province and another one from Sichuan province. The leading Thunder divinity in the latter tradition is Marshal T'ien-p'eng who is associated with the God-Emperor of the North and has a background in Shang-ch'ing Taoism. Reiter selects exorcist devices such as the Prison of Fire for Demons and various other types of demon-prisons. He also discusses the abundant amulets and seals for exorcist rituals, and presents the Divine Stick of T'ien-p'eng which is a small wooden ritual tool that today is still in use. The practice of submitting formal applications to the spirit Thunder administration to get the divine approval and backing for any specific exorcism is introduced as well. Reiter displays the historic frame for applying the exorcist devices and defines these practices as constituent elements of Heavenly Masters Taoism. All those methods and devices serve the salvation of individual clients and support society as a whole. Evidence thereof is the establishment of temples, the officially ordered ordination and installation of Taoist priests, and especially the publication and distribu…tion of Taoist religious literature in the form of an officially sanctioned Canon. The interest the T'ang state took in organizing the canonical representation of the Chinese religions came to be a lasting element of Chinese cultural history. The Taoist canonical title The Beginning of the Subtle School of Taoism documents some state efforts that preceded the edition of the first T'ang Taoist canon. Large numbers of outstanding secular scholars and eminent Taoist priests, mainly stationed at temples in the capital Ch'ang-an, followed the summons of emperor Hsuan-tsung to study, to work on, and to organize the Taoist scriptures in the imperial library. The canonical title I-ch'ieh tao-ching yin-i miao-men yu-ch'i reveals the intention and the scope of these academic efforts. The present volume studies the encyclopedic source, presents Preface and contents, and also compares other Taoist encyclopedias of the T'ang period in order to describe the official perception of Taoism in the early T'ang period.
