Miller schrieb den Roman zwischen 1930 und 1932, teilweise basierend auf seinen eigenen Erlebnissen in Paris in diesen Jahren. Der Roman ist im Stil undatierter Tagebucheinträge geschrieben, in denen sich eindeutig sexuelle Schilderungen, allgemein philosophische Überlegungen sowie oftmals surrealistisch und burlesk überzeichnet dargestellte Alltagssituationen abwechseln. Die Chronologie ist nur schwer nachvollziehbar, da assoziative Elemente in den Erzählfluss eingebunden sind. Das Buch war in der Bundesrepublik eine Zeit lang indiziert. Die erste deutsche Ausgabe, übersetzt von Kurt Wagenseil, wurde 1953 in einer einmaligen, beschränkten und nummerierten Auflage von 1500 Exemplaren gedruckt; die zweite Ausgabe erschien als überarbeitete Übersetzung, und mit dem übersetzten Vorwort von Anaïs Nin, 1962. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Elias Holl machte Augsburg zur Stadt der RenaissanceIm Augsburger Lechviertel kam Elias Holl 1573 als Sohn des protestantischen Baumeisters Hans Holl zur Welt. Als Elias Holl 13 Jahre alt geworden war, wurde der Vater sein Lehrherr. 1596 erwarb Elias Holl selbst den Titel eines Maurermeisters. Während einer Italienreise im Jahr 1600 lernte Holl den Stil der Renaissance kennen, der ihn lebenslang prägte. Nach ersten Arbeiten an Schlössern, Stadtpalästen und einer Wallfahrtskapelle wurde Holl von der Reichsstadt Augsburg 1602 zum Stadtwerkmeister berufen. Elias Holl hat seine Heimatstadt während seiner langen Amtszeit maßgeblich umgestaltet und zur Renaissancestadt werden lassen. Holls Augsburger Hauptwerk ist das von ihm geplante, bis 1620 fertiggestellte monumentale Rathaus.Neben einer Reihe Holl'scher Bauten erinnern in Augsburg etliche Darstellungen, Denkmäler sowie der Elias-Holl-Platz beim Rathaus an den Stadtwerkmeister. Am Ende hat die Reichsstadt Elias Holl seine Lebensleistung übel gedankt: Denn als er sogar nach dem Restitutionsedikt von 1629 dem Neuen Glauben treu blieb, wurde er 1631 entlassen und um sein in der Stadtkasse angelegtes Geld betrogen. Elias Holl verstarb 1646 in Augsburg.Der Architekt und Handwerker-Ingenieur Holl war auch als Festungs- und Wasserbauer gefragt. Daran erinnert in Augsburg ein Objekt des UNESCO-Welterbes.
