Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of this memoir by a British lawyer-turned-special agent, who served behind enemy lines, alongside Patrick Leigh Fermor, in the Greek resistance. His account offers a valuable alternative perspective on the events portrayed in Stanley Moss's Ill Met by Moonlight (1950). Alexander "Sandy" Meadows Rendel (1910-1991) s…pent the first half of the Second World War serving as an artillery officer in the Middle East. He spoke Greek, having travelled to the country in peacetime. Following its formation in 1940, the Special Operations Executive deployed him and other agents - including his friend Thomas Dunbabin - to Nazi-occupied Greece. Rendel describes serving with Leigh Fermor ("I could hardly have had a more cheerful companion than Paddy" - p. 133) and the road to liberation in the aftermath of Leigh Fermor's successful kidnapping of General Heinrich Kreipe. Unlike other copies we have encountered, this example has the maps printed on the front pastedown rather than the front free endpaper verso. No priority between these states has been determined. Octavo. Original brown boards, spine lettered in gilt, maps on front pastedown. With dust jacket designed by John Craxton. Ownership signature ("Tillett") on front free endpaper verso. Binding well preserved, save for a little discolouration and bumping at spine ends and touch of bowing to front board; jacket unclipped, light chipping and rubbing, small split: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
