Most of the hand-colored illustrations show monuments with allegorical figures. The vignette on the title-page is signed by the engraver Noach van der Meer the younger (1741-1822). In de nacht van 10 op 11 mei 1796 werden zij echter gewapenderhand bevrijd door een groep kanonniers die het stadhuis was binnengedrongen en ook anderen vrijlieten, waaronder een zekere Hunnemeijer. $Albertus Ploos van Amstel werd ook op het stadhuis gevangen gehouden, evenals Gerrit Jan van Nes die tot twee jaar verbanning uit de stad werd veroordeeld.
