Both letters are on bifoliums, and both on aged paper, with damp and rust staining. ONE: 7 October 1887. 2pp., 12mo. Blackwoods the publishers have forwarded to him Langbridge's 'letter asking for permission to quote three passages from George Eliot's works in a book of "Readings" which you are preparing', and he has 'great pleasure in according you the desired permission'. TWO: 12 March 1888. 3pp., 12mo. With mourning border. He is 'very glad' to have Langbridge's 'full and thoroughly satisfactory explanation'. He is completing the form which Blackwoods have forwarded to him, and suggests that Langbridge's 'printed letter should make it clear that you are asking the publishers in case they should be joint proprietors of the copyright. This would prevent any similar misconception to that which has arisen in this case.' The work referred to is presumably Langbridge's 'What to Read at Winter Entertainments', published in four parts, 1888-1890.

370x240mm. Unpaginated. Bound in brown morocco, decorated in blind and with, on the upper cover, four brass cornerpieces on which are placed round coloured glass bobbles. In the centre is a brass cross with deep maroon glass bobbles on each arm and, in the middle, a pale green marble effect round stone. It is a very striking and handsome design. Some rubbing to the extremities and a slight scuff mark to the spine. Internally very good with only the very slightest touch of foxing, this is a beautiful example of the work of the younger Charles Whittingham who took over his uncle's Chiswick Press in 1840. Whittingham revived old type faces and produced numerous woodcut initials and ornaments and, in so doing, inspired what was to become the private press movement. The antiquarian interests that inspired Whittingham would have appealed to Frederick Lee, the editor and compiler of this Prayer Book. Lee was an Anglican priest, very much on the high side. He founded both the Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom and the Order of Corporate Reunion which sought closer links between the Church of England and Rome. The liturgies in this book are based on an amalgamation of about eighty pre- and post-Reformation Missals and Prayer Books. It is completely unauthorised. After a life-time of praying for Catholic/Anglican reunion, he did the sensible thing and converted to Rome on his deathbed. A splendid and rather gorgeous book.
