Previous owners book plate to front paste down. Illustrations to text which is clean with little wear, just some slight spotting.

This edition also published in 1884, likely a second impression of the first edition.Bound in the publisher's original, gilt cloth binding with continuous pagination between both volumes.Copiously illustrated with exquisite in-text illustrations of flowers. Collated complete from a copy held at the Welcome Collection.A Wesleyan minister and naturalist, Rev. Hilderic Friend travelled to China as a missionary before returning home in 1880 for health reasons. In the process of recuperating, Friend began to take a keen interest in botany.Flowers and Flower Lore was preceeded by his earlier work, A Glossary of Devonshire Plant Names, published in 1882. Bound in publisher's cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally, very good. With mild bumping to extremities, notable head and tail of spines. Spines slightly faded. Minor mottling to lower corners of front boards. The odd mark to boards. Hinges strained at front boards and further significant straining throughout volume two . Previously reinforced with archival tape. Internally, volume one firmly bound, pages 561 to 592 of volume two disbound. Pages bright and clean. Scattered spotting, primarily to outer pages. Mild age toning. Good. Not Stated (illustratore). book.
