Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, printed for private circulation. Slim hardback, grey cloth boards with printed titling. 21 × 14cm, 35pp. A privately printed In Memoriam book for James Gordon Smith, printed for his father, Samuel Smith MP. The book contains a preface, a sermon by the Rev George Johnstone…titled The Incompleteness of Life (preached in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Prince's Park, 11th December 1898), an address at the Chapel of Toxteth Park, and a list of those present at the funeral. James Gordon Smith (1871-1898) was the only son of Liverpool MP and philanthropist Samuel Smith, who was associated with Liverpool charities such as the Mersey Mission to Seamen, Mrs.Birt's Sheltering Home, the YMCA etc, and was also a keen supporter of "social purity", attacking plays that he thought had displays of sexuality, or "glorification of the vulgarest debauchery" as he put it. Samuel erected and opened a building for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society and Bethel Union in 1900 as a memorial to mark the death of his son. It became the Gordon Smith Institute in Paradise Street, and was the headquarters for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society. Condition: Good condition. There is some marking to the cloth along the bottom edge, and some light spotted foxing to the prelims, but otherwise in good, solid condition.

A very SCARCE series of lectures issued together under the one banner title. From the introduction: "The first lecture in this volume inaugurated the winter series, 1869, and was published in pamphlet form, but met with so limited a sale, that it was considered inexpedient to continue the experiment. Considerable disappointment and dissatisfaction having been expressed, at the the non-publication of the whole of the first series, the Committee determined to make arrangements for publishing each lecture of the winter series, 1870". With "Typographical Errors" errata sheet bound in prior to the "Creation versus Development" lecture. "The Early Closing Association was a Victorian organisation formed by retail workers in the 1850s who attempted to improve their working conditions. One of their goals was to legislate shop closing times. Instead of petitioning the government, going on strike or protesting in the street, retail workers tried to persuade the public and shop owners that shorter hours would be best for everyone. They called this 'moral suasion' and they relied on people supporting shorter shopping hours out of the goodness of their hearts. Eventually, the Early Closing Association called on the government to limit shop trading hours." Bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blind-ruled borders to covers, original plain brown endpapers. Spine title: "Lectures - Early Closing Associ.n". Slight shelfwear, soiling to covers (mainly rear), hinges tender, minimal foxing, remnant of small label to front pastedown, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy of an uncommon book. RARE. SB-16.
