Contemporary tan full diced calf, board edges gilt-ruled. Spine with gilt titles, raised bands, and blind tooling. Marbled endpapers. All edges speckled red. Internally bright and clean, the odd bit of spotting here and there. Offsetting from frontispiece to facing leaves. Calf moderately marked and discoloured to extremities. Slight cracking to joints. Light edgewear. Very good. Beilby Porteus (1731-1809), initially bishop of Chester and then of London, was a leading English abolitionist who at first tried to limit the volume of human trafficking to England but eventually called for the dismantling of slavery itself.
