Issues from four volumes bound into two volumes. 121 plates in total.Very scarce, with only copies of the First Series found at previous auctions.In half calf, with embossed cloth boards.First appearing in 1861, The Floral Magazine serves as a guide to exotic flowers as well as hybrids raised in British nurseries. The hand-coloured plates beautifully depict each of the species, illustrated by Worthington G. Smith to 1872-73 and J. N. Fitch to 1877-78, and include a vibrant variety of popular Victorian garden flowers.Copiously illustrated. Bernard Quaritch in a General Catalogue of Booksin 1874 praises the series for its "beautifully coloured plates" and notes it was already "very scarce."Each issue contains articles on the latest exhibitions, reviews and notable developments within the world of botany.1872 comprises Issues No. 1 - No. 6 (January-June), No. 8 (August) and No. 10 - No. 12 (October-December).
