Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. A large, through, bi-directional Spanish and English dictionary. While thorough, it is also intentionally modern, and so may not include some archaic phrases useful to genealogists. Black cloth cover fraying at the edges (particularly top edge, where much has been rubbed off by shelf wear, and with a piece of scotch tape at top of spine apparently to reinforce fraying there), but book is otherwise in very good condition. Same age toning to pages. Dust jacket, while in one piece, is pretty worn. Both top and bottom have been reinforced with what appears to be regular scotch tape to reinforce multiple small tears, and there are some creases both to the flaps and the back of the dust jacket. 6½ x 9¾ inches, 700 pages Spanish to English, 780 pages English to Spanish. Large, heavy book - may require extra postage.

Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Assumed First Edition. 786 Pages. This book is protected with a Demco Polyfit vinyl covering that was installed when the book was purchased. This is the 1993 Copyright of this Historical Novel about Poland's early history. The Teutonic Knights is an epic of medieval times and national destiny, ranking as one of the highest achievements from the pen of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1905. The novel follows the adventures of Macko, a resourceful and wise veteran of war, and his young nephew, Zbyszko, the symbol of a maturing nation, as they struggle, along with the unified peoples of Poland and Lithuania, against the oppressive religious military order, the Teutonic Knights. Among the many memorable characters are Jurand, a merciless, bitter fighter consumed with revenge; his daughter, the innocent Danusia, a girl of twelve who must face the barbarity of the German knighthood; the strong-willed Jagienka, equally adept at shooting a crossbow or administering an estate; Hlawa, a Czech squire of noble birth who is as quick with his wit as he is with his axe; Sanderus, a peddler of religious relics and indulgences whose earthly cravings seem greater than any spiritual needs. A host of other memorable characters fills the canvas set against lush, almost magical forests, dangerous marshes replete with tales of human heads walking on spider legs, winter blizzards that blanket the world in a white wonderland.

Considered essential reading for generals, statesmen & liberally educated citizens for more than 2,000 years, 'The Peloponnesian War' is a mine of military, moral, political & philosophical wisdom. However, this classic book has long presented obstacles to the uninitiated reader. Written centuries before the rise of modern historiography, Thucydides' narrative is not continuous or linear. His authoritative chronicle of what he considered the greatest war of all time is rigorous & meticulous, yet omits the many aides to comprehension modern readers take for granted, such as brief biographies of the story's main characters, maps & other visual enhancements, & background on the military, cultural & political traditions of ancient Greece. Robert Strassler's new edition amends these omissions & not only provides a new coherence to the narrative overall but effectively reconstructs the lost cultural context that Thucydides shared w/ his original audience. Based on the venerable Richard Crawley translation, updated & revised for modern readers, 'The Landmark Thucydides' includes a vast array of superbly designed & presented maps, brief informative appendices by outstanding classical scholars on subjects of special relevance to the text, explanatory marginal notes on each page, an index of unprecedented subtlety, & numerous other useful features. Readers will find that w/this edition they can dip into the text at any point & be immediately oriented w/ regard to the geography, season, date, & stage of the conflict. In any list of great books of Western Civilization, 'The Peloponnesian War' stands near the top. This handsome, elegant & authoritative new edition will ensure that its greatness is appreciated by future generations. * "This is the best book w/ which to start the study of Thucydides & the Peloponnesian War. It presents the finest English translation. Its maps, scholarly appendices, & notes permit the beginner to understand the text & to move easily & at once to a higher level of study than has been possible up to now." - Donald Kagan, author of 'On the Origins of War' & 'Pericles of Athens' * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee) & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL for at-cost rates quoted upon request.
