A drug addict and hypochondriac whose life was wrecked and illuminated by hallucination, Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) was an unlikely newspaperman. His brief reign as the aggressive Tory Editor of The Westmorland Gazette has been largely overlooked by biographers, even though it gave him an excellent grounding in journalism. At the very least, the Gazette forced the celebrated author of Confessions of an English Opium-Eater into print. Richard Caseby's book sets this Editorship and the founding of the Gazette against the background of a complex and tragic childhood, De Quincey's extravagant hero worship of William Wordsworth, the horrors and beauties of opium addiction and the uncertainty of a turbulent political climate. It also tells of Wordsworth's undercover intrigue as a political agent for the ruling county gentry during the critical Westmorland election of 1818 and the poet's unofficial position as Executive Editor of the Gazette. Despite drug addiction and the threat of poverty, De Quincey edited the Gazette with poise and distinction. No other provincial paper could boast such an intellectual star. The bicentenary of De Quincey's birth is marked in 1985 by an exhibition arranged jointly by the Wordsworth Museum, at Grasmere, and the National Library of Scotland. As a tribute to De Quincey, one of his Gazette essays, The Danish Origin of the Lake Country Dialect, is published here in full for the first time since 1819. Size: 8vo. …
