This is mainly due to the fact that American music is a worldwide predominant cultural reality. Black American music with its inherent linguistic characteristics, by the same token, looms large within that heritage. In this paper I will commence with a description of the term 'Ebonics' and some information on the scientific state of affairs concerning its origins. Then I will proceed to some phonological aspects and conclude with a short look at its grammatical structure and idiosyncrasies. African-American English, the linguistic variety spoken by many African Americans in the United States of America, is a system with specific rules for combining sounds to form words, phrases and sentences. The first researchers who took an interest in this called it 'Non-Standard Negro English', 'Negro dialect' or 'American Negro speech'. However, because of the growing objections to the term Negro, other terms had to be found - parallel to the changes - in referring to black people. But even though the terms 'African-American Vernacular English' (AAVE), 'Black communications', Black dialect', 'Black English', 'Black Vernacular English', 'African American language', 'African American English' and, as Stanford Afro-American Linguist John Baugh named it, 'Black Street Speech' (Baugh, 1983: 11), have all been used to label this variety over the past forty years, the word 'Ebonics' (a blend of ebony and phonetics that was created in 1973 by a group of black scholars) is probably the most popular one today. This essay is to be understood as a brief survey on its grammatical and linguistic features.

Since the relationship between the big topic and the space at my disposal can best be described as unproportional (to say the least), it will, in the end, remain but a very concise (and perforce, somewhat superficial) overlook rather than an in-depth study. One reason for the inadequacy lies in the fact that there are notable divides between the rural people and city dwellers, Catholics and Protestants, Norne Irons (Northern Irelanders) and Irelanders from the Republic, and the Irish-speaking people inside and outside the Gaeltacht (Gaelic speaking regions) and the English-speaking majority population. The culture of the Irish is, thus, far from being homogeneous. In order to meet the conditions of a description of the manifestations of Ireland's culture at different levels nonetheless, I used Geert Hofstede's 'onion diagram' (hence the title) as a guideline and worked through the layers from the outside to the core (cf. Hofstede 1991: 9). Thus, I will deal with Ireland's symbols first, move on to its heroes, describe some of the rituals, eventually shed some light at the cultural values and close with displaying some of the more common stereotypes.

Researchers might explore what is common to English in all countries where it is used for internal communication, demonstrating how far it is legitimate to speak of a common core for English or of an international written standard.' As a result of that breadth of view and building on his early experimental techniques investigating English grammar and usage, Greenbaum founded the International Corpus of English (ICE). The ICE is a major research project based at the Survey of English Usage to establish identically constructed corpora in different countries of the English-speaking world and provides linguists with a suitable database for their investigations regarding language usage and development, respectively.This term paper attempts to demonstrate what corpus-based approaches can tell about New Englishes and Asian Varieties, respectively. One can even go so far as to state that English became the lingua franca on account of the major influences this medium has had on cultures around the globe up to date. With a humongous variety of youth oriented - and most notably, youth accepted - songs in the target language, it is patently obvious that this material is most suitable, practical and applicable for the integration of literacy skills in the classroom. After all, infants learn to sing before they speak and it appears that this natural propensity is maintained over a long period, considering the fact that most youngsters spend more time with American music than with anything else. This poses two questions; can music enhance the acquisition of a second language in general and the student's reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities in particular In this essay, I will commence with the establishment of a connection between these literacy skills and music. In the process, I will then try to shed some light on various linguistic hypotheses that can serve to be used as a scientific basis for the song oriented approach, enhance my attempt using examples and conclude with some assorted practical applications.

'This is stupid.', 'It doesn't make sense.', 'Why do I have to deal with this '. These are common remarks often spilling out of the students at the thought of dealing with poetry. In an attempt to get them to grasp some of the poetry that they will face throughout their education, this teaching unit attempts to use a movie scene as a way of hooking the students. The unit hopes to make enough thematic connections to allow the students the opportunity to more closely examine and explicate a poem by exposing the conduit between it and an individual's biography. In addition to the thematic connections, this unit will also reveal common elements of poetry in a non-threatening environment. Students will learn about concepts like metaphors, allusions and other elements of poetry by first discovering them in the film. At the same time they upgrade and extend their vocabulary with words, terms, idioms and the vernacular that is used within the dialogs around the poem. Their newly acquired knowledge enables them to articulate both personal discernments and popular apprehensions on the vicissitudes of life (and may even trigger the desire in one or the other to start writing his or her own poem in English, whether it be in a more traditional form or in a rap or a song) and thus serves the primary target of foreign language education: intercultural communicative competence (cf. Council of Europe 2001: 43). Cinema is a vital and powerful medium, and the hope is that it can be used in an effort to hook the students and bring them closer to the enjoyment of poetry. The presentation of poetry in a form that combines four aspects, namely the visual (or optic), phonetic (or sound), kinetic (moving in a visual succession) and emotional aspect is of great significance to the analysis of what is perceived. Watching a movie is probably the easiest and most comfortable way of knowledge transfer that the students are familiar with. The visualization of a plot in a film offers more challenging potential for what contemporary literature educationalists call the personal response approach (cf. Nünning/Surkamp 2006: 64) than a book (ibid. 247). The learner gets emotionally involved almost immediately and throughout the scene.

Aus bildungspolitischer Sicht ist dabei insbesondere der Anteil der jüngeren Bevölkerung mit Migrationshinter-grund von Interesse, denn es zeigt sich, dass in Deutschland jedes dritte Kind unter sechs Jahren einen solchen aufweist (32,5 %) und bei der Gruppe der unter 25-Jährigen der Anteil bei 27,2 % liegt (vgl. ebd.). Lag der Anteil der ausländischen Schüler an allgemeinbildenden Schulen Mitte der 1960er Jahre noch bei lediglich 0,5% aller Schüler, so ist er inzwischen auf ca. 10% angewachsen. Im Rahmen der musikalischen Begabtenforschung und der Studien über Talent, Begabung und musikalische Fähigkeiten, stellte sich sukzessive die Frage nach der Veränderung dieser Determinanten während des Verlaufs einer musikalischen Biografie. Initialzündung für dementsprechende Studien in Deutschland war die Vergabe eines Forschungsvorhabens des Bundesministers für Bildung und Wissenschaft über Lebensgeschichten musikalischer Begabungen, an den Gründer und Leiter des Instituts für Begabungsforschung und Begabtenförderung in der Musik, Prof. Hans Günter Bastian. Die Ergebnisse dieser Biographie-Studie an 62 Teilnehmern des bundesweiten Wettbewerbs Jugend musiziert dokumentierte Bastian in seinem Buch Leben für Musik (Bastian, 1989). Sein Nachfolger am Institut, Heiner Gembris, nutzte die institutionellen Verhältnisse und Bastians Vorarbeit für seine eigenen Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der musikalischen Fähigkeiten und Entwicklungen. Mit der, im Oktober 2002 vom Institut ausgerichteten Konferenz Musical Aptitude from a Lifespan Perspective in Paderborn, schuf er eine Plattform für die Forschungsergebnisse von Maria Manturzewska (Polen), Ralf Th. Krampe (Deutschland), Janet Mills/Jan Smith und anderen, welche vier Jahre später in Musical Development from a Lifespan Perspective (Gembris, 2006) veröffentlicht wurden.Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Ergebnissen dieser Studien in Bezug auf die musikalische Lebensentwicklung im Teilbereich des Erwachsenenalters.Zum Aufbau der Arbeit In Kapitel 1 wird ein Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der Forschung gegeben. Im Rahmen der musikalischen Begabtenforschung und der Studien über Talent, Begabung und musikalische Fähigkeiten, stellte sich sukzessive die Frage nach der Veränderung dieser Determinanten während des Verlaufs einer musikalischen Biografie. Initialzündung für dementsprechende Studien in Deutschland war die Vergabe eines Forschungsvorhabens des Bundesministers für Bildung und Wissenschaft über Lebensgeschichten musikalischer Begabungen, an den Gründer und Leiter des Instituts für Begabungsforschung und Begabtenförderung in der Musik, Prof. Hans Günter Bastian. Die Ergebnisse dieser Biographie-Studie an 62 Teilnehmern des bundesweiten Wettbewerbs ¿Jugend musiziert¿ dokumentierte Bastian in seinem Buch Leben für Musik (Bastian, 1989). Sein Nachfolger am Institut, Heiner Gembris, nutzte die institutionellen Verhältnisse und Bastians Vorarbeit für seine eigenen Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der musikalischen Fähigkeiten und Entwicklungen. Mit der, im Oktober 2002 vom Institut ausgerichteten Konferenz Musical Aptitude from a Lifespan Perspective in Paderborn, schuf er eine Plattform für die Forschungsergebnisse von Maria Manturzewska (Polen), Ralf Th. Krampe (Deutschland), Janet Mills/Jan Smith und anderen, welche vier Jahre später in Musical Development from a Lifespan Perspective (Gembris, 2006) veröffentlicht wurden. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Ergebnissen dieser Studien in Bezug auf die musikalische Lebensentwicklung im Teilbereich des Erwachsenenalters. Zum Aufbau der Arbeit In Kapitel 1 wird ein Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der Forschung gegeben. Aspekte der Entwicklung einer Biografie werden anhand von ausgewählten Modellen und Theorien beleuchtet. Erkenntnisse aus der Entwicklungspsychologie und der Musikpsychologie werden zum besseren Verständnis vorausgeschickt. Es wird ebenfalls untersucht, inwiefern die Forschung auf den o.g. Gebieten bereits in das Thema der musikalischen Entwicklung im Erwachsenenalter eingeflossen ist. Die Kapitel 4 und 5 beschäftigen sich mit den beiden Faktoren der fluiden und kristallinen Intelligenz und den wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen ihrer Wandelbarkeit. Der Bedeutung des familiären Hintergrunds, des sozialen Umfeldes und der individuellen Lernerfahrungen auf die musikalische Entwicklung im Erwachsenenalter bei professionellen Musikern.

With a humongous variety of youth oriented - and most notably, youth accepted - songs in the target language, it is patently obvious that this material is most suitable, practical and applicable for the integration of literacy skills in the classroom. After all, infants learn to sing before they speak and it appears that this natural propensity is maintained over a long period, considering the fact that most youngsters spend more time with American music than with anything else. This poses two questions; can music enhance the acquisition of a second language in general and the student's reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities in particular In this essay, I will commence with the establishment of a connection between these literacy skills and music. 'This is stupid.', 'It doesn't make sense.', 'Why do I have to deal with this '. These are common remarks often spilling out of the students at the thought of dealing with poetry. In an attempt to get them to grasp some of the poetry that they will face throughout their education, this teaching unit attempts to use a movie scene as a way of hooking the students. The unit hopes to make enough thematic connections to allow the students the opportunity to more closely examine and explicate a poem by exposing the conduit between it and an individual's biography. In addition to the thematic connections, this unit will also reveal common elements of poetry in a non-threatening environment. Students will learn about concepts like metaphors, allusions and other elements of poetry by first discovering them in the film. At the same time they upgrade and extend their vocabulary with words, terms, idioms and the vernacular that is used within the dialogs around the poem. Their newly acquired knowledge enables them to articulate both personal discernments and popular apprehensions on the vicissitudes of life (and may even trigger the desire in one or the other to start writing his or her own poem in English, whether it be in a more traditional form or in a rap or a song) and thus serves the primary target of foreign language education: intercultural communicative competence (cf. Council of Europe 2001: 43). Cinema is a vital and powerful medium, and the hope is that it can be used in an effort to hook the students and bring them closer to the enjoyment of poetry. The presentation of poetry in a form that combines four aspects, namely the visual (or optic), phonetic (or sound), kinetic (moving in a visual succession) and emotional aspect is of great significance to the analysis of what is perceived. Watching a movie is probably the easiest and most comfortable way of knowledge transfer that the students are familiar with. The visualization of a plot in a film offers more challenging potential for what contemporary literature educationalists call the personal response approach (cf. Personen mit Migra-tionshintergrund (vgl. Statistisches Bundesamt, 2008). Aus bildungspolitischer Sicht ist dabei insbesondere der Anteil der jüngeren Bevölkerung mit Migrationshinter-grund von Interesse, denn es zeigt sich, dass in Deutschland jedes dritte Kind unter sechs Jahren einen solchen aufweist (32,5 %) und bei der Gruppe der unter 25-Jährigen der Anteil bei 27,2 % liegt (vgl. ebd.). Lag der Anteil der ausländischen Schüler an allgemeinbildenden Schulen Mitte der 1960er Jahre noch bei lediglich 0,5% aller Schüler, so ist er inzwischen auf ca. 10% angewachsen. Damit werden sowohl die Bildungsbeteiligung als auch der Bildungserfolg der ausländischen Schüler zu gesellschaftlich relevanten Themenbereichen, denn es kristallisierte sich schon ziemlich früh heraus, dass trotz einer Vielzahl an (sogenannten) ausländerpädagogischen Maßnahmen, Nachteile für Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund im Verhältnis zu deutschen Kindern beim erfolgreichen Durchlaufen des Schulsystems bestehen.Sind ausländische Kinder oder Kinder aus Migrantenfamilien nun Sorgenkinder, die nicht über die notwendigen Voraussetzungen oder den Willen verfügen, das deutsche System schulischer Bildung mit Erfolg zu durchlaufen oder handelt es sich bei ihnen um eine Bildungsreserve, welche zu nutzen die Institutionen des deutschen Schulsystems bislang nicht verstanden haben Dieser Frage soll im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit nachgegangen werden. This is mainly due to the fact that American music is a worldwide predominant cultural reality. Black American music with its inherent linguistic characteristics, by the same token, looms large within that heritage. In this paper I will commence with a description of the term ¿Ebonics¿ and some information on the scientific state of affairs concerning its origins. Then I will proceed to some phonological aspects and conclude with a short look at its grammatical structure and idiosyncrasies. African-American English, the linguistic variety spoken by many African Americans in the United States of America, is a system with specific rules for combining sounds to form words, phrases and sentences. The first researchers who took an interest in this called it ¿Non-Standard Negro English¿, ¿Negro dialect¿ or ¿American Negro speech¿. However, because of the growing objections to the term Negro, other terms had to be found ¿ parallel to the changes ¿ in referring to black people. But even though the terms ¿African-American Vernacular English¿ (AAVE), ¿Black communications¿, Black dialect¿, ¿Black English¿, ¿Black Vernacular English¿, ¿African American language¿, ¿African American English¿ and, as Stanford Afro-American Linguist John Baugh named it, ¿Black Street Speech¿ (Baugh, 1983: 11), have all been used to label this variety over the past forty years, the word ¿Ebonics¿ (a blend of ebony and phonetics that was created in 1973 by a group of black scholars) is probably the most popular one today.
