Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the Order of St. John, a medieval religious and military order dedicated to caring for the sick and defending Christendom. From its humble beginnings as a hospice for pilgrims in Jerusalem, the Order rose to prominence, establishing itself as a powerful force in the Crusades and later gaining control of the island of Rhodes. The author traces the Order's evolution from a charitable organization to a formidable military force, highlighting the tensions and rivalries that shaped its relationship with other religious orders like the Templars. The book explores the Order's diverse activities, including its hospital work, its role in the defense of the Holy Land, and its later involvement in maritime warfare. Readers will learn about the Order's complex internal structure, the creation of national "Langues," and the distribution of its wealth across Europe. The author skillfully combines historical accounts with detailed financial records, providing readers with a vivid picture of the Order's operations and its impact on the societies in which it operated. This book offers a valuable and engaging look at a key institution in medieval European history, shedding light on its achievements, struggles, and enduring legacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
